Two days ago I changed my rear diff oil. I put in 3 quarts of the Motorcraft 75W140 and half of the 4 oz. bottle of friction modifier, took it for a test drive, noticed some binding then put the rest of the friction modifier in.
I put about 400 miles on the truck over the last two days but I am still noticing a small amount of binding when I turn corners, not as bad as I did before I changed out the gear oil but it's still there.
Do I need more friction modifier or do I have another issue??
The owner’s manual calls for 3.3L and if you only put in 3 quarts that means you have put in 2.8L Most of the ones I have seen changed run about 4 quarts with 4-8 oz of friction modifier. A good rule for friction modifier is 4oz for every 3qts of gear oil.
If it's still making noise or you can feel it acting funny, add a couple more ounces and drive it again. Too much friction modifier and you're left with basically an open diff. Just add an ounce or two at a time till it feels right.
I seem to remember that I read somewhere that you add 3 oz of friction modifier, try it out, and if you feel binding add another ounce. Repeat until no binding is detected...That's how I did it anyway.
I have read to put half in, drive it some, then go from there which I did but I never read where anybody had to put more than 4 oz. in so I wanted to make sure before I dumped more in.
SARDiverDan, the 3 quarts filled it full, I almost didn't get all of the friction modifier in it before it started to drip out. Hopefully I will have enough room to add some more fric mod in?
F350-6, I did read where if you put to much in you will not move. Thats why I wanted to refer to you guys, I was afraid to put anymore in.
Thanks again guys, I will get another bottle and slowly put some more in.
You've already done the work, but next time, just get some Royal Purple 75W140. I did and no extra modifier needed, and my limited slip works like a champ.
When I installed the '08 differential cover I got from Clay a Ford dealer tech, one that drives a 7.3 told me to add two bottles of the friction modifier. It took about two ounces
less than four quarts of the lubricant. Maybe, the '08 diff. cover adds a little more capacity.
I have pulled my 5er over 6000 miles and all is well.

I now wish I had done that! It made me nervous even thinking about adding the modifier...to much and yer screwed, not enough and you eventually screw something up!!
