Look at all the big trucks on the highway, look at the signs on the back of some of them about how much each of them pay a year in road taxes. 8,000 dollars each is probably a low estimate.
Now think about how much that tax is raising the cost of everything you buy.
How will they know if the BIO in your tank was bought at a legit station or home brewed?
Unless the dye is required required on anational level I can see all sort of problems with people driving into different jurisdictions with u-dyed fuel. How long until the crafty home-brewers figure out how to dye their own fuel? Any government administration would look like a bunch of tards if they banned Bio altogether.
I agree it is not even worth it to run "red" fuel. Tax is a wonderful thing it goes up, prices go up, services go down, and pot holes that will swallow your truck get bigger. While our beloved elected officials drive BMW's. Oh, well safe driving everyone and for Pete sake go to work there are millions on welfare needing your hard earned tax dollars.
PS there are also thousands of politicians who need you to go to work so they can get raises and find all the tax loop holes and breaks for themselves.

Amen to ALL that, Brutha!
'Cept they don't have to "find" the tax breaks or loopholes - they just write the tax code with all those breaks and loopholes for themselves and their buddies to take advantage of....
talking about prices, i'm in n. mississippi and the prices have been running from 2.39 to 2.79 ... just depends on which station you want to visit. the only thing that burns my britches about the price being high as gasoline is that diesel is the LAST thing they get from petroleum before they they throw it away. in 1968 regular leaded gas was 21.8 cents per gallon and ON-ROAD diesel was 8 to 10 cents a gallon. now, i know that inflation has gone ballistic, but come on, going from half the cost to the same price or higher?????? i think they just found a product to make more profit from and they figure that most of the users will (farmers, truckers, et cetera) have a way to add that increase to their end product. i'm just a guy with a f-250 and an international tractor. can't charge anybody for my toys to make up for the increase (or i certainly would)

Sorry but us farmers (cash grain) are at the mercy of the world market. For many years as everything has gone up in price to us as inputs. Our prices recieved has either stayed the same or has gone down. Example: In the late 50's corn was around $1.00 and diesel was $ .08 per gallon. Harvest (05) corn was $1.50 and diesel was $2.25 (with no tax). Fertilizer in the 50's was $60 and now it is $225. We can't pass on our costs to consmers we just have to suck it up.
well i rather pay the road tax on fuel then have to pay a serval thousand dollar fine.
now i run red in my tractor which is only 25 cent cheaper on the gallon then on road so that what 5.00 on 20 gallons yeah i pay the tax now save money in the long run
This is an interesting thread. Here in New Mexico, I have not heard of the Staters checking fuel. We have the DOT police that do nothing but pull over Big rigs all day long. I think this would fall under their jurisdiction here.

You are absolutely right on the money! Diesel is much less expensive to produce than Gasoline, yet it is .40 cents a gallon more, at least here in NM. It is up to 2.80 per gal just about everywhere in this State. This IMO is simply getting gouged by the Petrol industry once again. You cannot beat these guys. When Diesel was pretty inexpensive several years ago, people werent driving as many Diesels as they are today. It is all supply and demand, along with a bit of KY Jelly!
yes it is all about the demand, but as for checking in NC they do check you and check your for we have to have weighted tags on all trucks and suv, if a truck weighs less then 4000 pounds then you can have a reg tag, but there not many trucks under 4000 pounds. so the dot are out there checking trucks for over weight and fuel if it is a diesel i know my cousin has diesel trucks and he does lawncare and his mower is a diesel. so he gets checked. for weight and fuel. and them DOT guys carry portible scales in there trunk. the states way of getting more money. they get you here on the tags each year and the taxes. i have to pay 200.00 (i think) for tags each year and the property tax is higher due to it is a diesel, and then the fuel tax at the pump. and the hassle from DOT if caught for over weight or running red fuel and the fines court cost HECK they might even have jail time here for running red (i will have to check)
In WV it is the Department of Tax and Revenue Criminal Investigation Division that does the fuel checks.
Since it is money out of their revenue, they do the checking.
They have absolutely no sense of humor about anything.
Any crap from you can result in tax evasion charges on top of the regular 5000 dollar fine plus costs for the first offense.
Second offense is more.
Although I don't have my paper from the last time I was dipped, the penalties do include possible jail time, this chance goes up if you are stopped and busted a second time.
Also since there is state and federal tax on the fuel, you can be charged for both state and federal tax evasion.
they don't seem to be checking that closely here for running red, but the price of off road fuel isn't enough difference to bother. most of the time i don't even bother running red in the trackhoe....even when running it 8 hrs a day for a week, it's not worth the hassle of filling out forms and keeping up with paperwork for the piddling difference in the price. only time i've run red in my 250 is when i ran out of fuel and the only thing there was red. yeah, the fuel sending unit was bad and i hadn't replaced it. you can bet that it got replaced real soon after that experience. just haven't found it worthwhile to run the risk of a fine to evade the taxes. somebody was commenting on the LP systems on vehicles earlier. don't know about other states, but in MS, they have a tax stamp you have to post on your tank to run it on road. if you get caught running without it, boy, they get in your billfold pretty deep. don't ask how i know, rather not have to say.
