I had a similiar problem. I replace the transmission position sensor (on the driver's side of the tranny) and the problems went away. I took a whole 15 minutes to fix. It's a dealer part only. I took the old/bad sensor apart and found that it was full of corrosion that prevented good electrical contacts. It cost me $60 at the dealer. I cleaned up the old part and now keep it as a spare. Before you replace the part you may want to take off the old one, drill out the rivets, clean up the corrosion, and replace. You may not need a new part if you can get the old one apart without breaking it. All it really is, is a glorified switch.

Hi all. I had the 4X4 problem on my 98 a few years back. Do and advance search on my user name shellback86. In a nutshell -

I had to take it to Ford. Here's what you need to do. Disconnect your battery for a couple of minutes to reset your computer. After you reconnect it, try shifting to 4Hi and 4Lo.

If it shifts, it's not your dash switch, vaccum lines, GEM, or fuse/relays. It will be your shift motor on the transfer case which is $300-$400 from Ford(labor not included). Probably much cheaper from a third party parts house. This is a part you can install yourself if you were inclined.

Tried your advice and it did shift into 4hi and 4lo. Was in a bind because the computer was not giving any service codes but this did work.

Thanks

4WD Not Engaging....disconnect battery.

I know this is an old post but after searching and trying numerous things....

If your 4WD used to work and all of a sudden you get nothing...no dash lights, no 4WD engaging, etc. Try disconnecting the battery and give it another shot. This resets your electronics
