Hello,
My 99 Expedition, 5.4L, A4WD, doesn't seem to be going into 4wd. I turn the switch and nothing happens. I can't feel any change while driving and the light doesn't come on. Are there fuses that control this? I did just have the recall maintenance performed for the Crusie Control wiring harness, and since then, I noticed that the 4x4 doesn't work, the temp dummy light keeps coming on at stops and turns, and the doors will auto unlock while a relay ticking sound happens. It sounds like the turn signal, but isn't.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
i have a fx4 it has the a4wd postion. while in that position my 4x4 light disen't come on either. but if the rear starts to spin it kicks in the 4wd for as long as needed. can you get into 4 hi or 4 lo?
No. I can't get it into 4H or 4L. I looked at the lights coming on again and the oild pressure light also comes on with the temp light. At the same time the oil pressure needle drops all the way down. I am wondering if it is the computer.
I don't have anything to pull the codes with and I am trying to avoid taking it in. The Automatic 4WD isn't working for sure. I am in the northeast and we are getting blasted right now. I took it out this morning and got on it pretty good. The back end was all over the place. Obviously now kicking into 4wd.
Fuse #104 on my '00 4x4. It's a Pink 30a in the middle of the fuse block towards the firewall end. This would be a place to start, but it sounds like something wrong with your gem.
If there was something wrong with the GEM, would the other things it handles not be working also? i.e. door locks, interior lights, windows, etc.? Thanks
if it's all wheel drive thier is no switch the computer tell it when to ingage,so your must be four wheel drive an there is a fuse maybe in the box under hund.
I read in another forum that the lights on the A4WD vehicles is controlled by the transfercase shift motor and that it frequently gets stuck when not used regularly. I am going to attempt to take that off this weekend and see what I can see.
Just in case it's the dumbest thing - on my 2000 XP I thought the same thing th fitst time Itried to put it into 4WD. The previous owner had said "sure you can switch on the fly, do it all the time". So I did, and nothing. Put iti in park and switched - nothing.
Then I read the owner's manual - to shift into 4WD it has to be stopped, in Neutral, and you have to have your foot on the brake. Otherwise I can flick the switch 'til the cows come home and it won't do a thing.

Fred, that's the case for 4-lo only. 4-hi "should" engage electronically at any speed with a flip of the switch.
i hate the sound it makes while engaging on the fly. it just doesn't sound like it's good for the truck. i stop to put it in a4wd. then if i need i'll switch to 4hi on the fly it doesn't make sound then. but it is in 4hi and is indicated on the dash. I can't wait to get more agressive tires and go play with it.
