I have the 4.2 liter engine and am having a starting problem. It is always hard to start but will after sitting for a sufficient period of time. If you turn it off and try to start it ten minutes later, you can probably forget it. I've replaced all plugs and wires and 2 of the three oxygen sensors as well as the fuel filter and air filter recently. It is giving a check engine light with a lean fuel mixture code. I'm running out of things to try. The only other thing that seems remotely related is I had the fuel pump replaced a bit ago. It seems like the starting problems came some time after that but it may not be related.
I have a 97 4.2 F150 SC (57,500) with similar symptoms. I have had the occasional split-second rough start for as long as I've owned the truck, but lately it doesn't want to start unless I crank it several times. Warm or cold makes no difference, and it seems to be getting progressively worse. I don't trust the truck right now, so I won't take it anywhere until it's right. Thanks.
