I am having a real puzzling problem with my 1987 ford ranger 2.9 auto trans. It cranks up fine, after it runs a few minutes, it will suddenly stop running. It sometimes will crank right back up and run fine for a minute or two, and then shut back off. Sometimes when it stops, it will not ctank back up, but will try to crank, and it seems if you hold the key to start it will try to keep running, but as soon as you release the key, it stops again. I have replaced the ignition switch, the fuel pump in the tank, the fuel filter, the fuel pressure regulator, and in fact even replaced the computer. Still the same problem. It does seem to be more prevelant on a cold day, as this problem started last winter, but the truck ran fine all summer, and has now started with the same problem again. I also replaced the tps. If you keep recranking engine, it will eventually start runniing fine and give no more problems all day, but tomorrow same thing again...Anybody got any new ideas.
From the batt terminal of the coil this is wired to a splice. From the splice one wire goes to the run terminal of the ignition switch & the other goes to the start terminal of the ignition switch. Since it quits running when you release the key, it sounds like it's open in the splice or the red/light green wire between the splice & ignition switch.
Try this, have someone remove the slip on connector from the starter relay (to disconnect the starter) while you hold the key at start, if it runs normally, check the above.
Son's 89 did this and hooked it on jumper cables to my old f100 and it ran. turned out to be the altenator plug harness was shorting out. Auto Zones has it for about 10 bucks.
thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to get on it this week and see if I can come up with something. You all have given me some good ideas to start with.......cwsdks
