Someone even older than I am had a trivia fact about Fords. He said that when Ford first went to Self Adjusting brakes ('57?), they welded the adjusting holes shut -- because they were no longer needed! ( except to replace the shoes)
Can anyone confirm or deny. The fellow that told me this was fairly well informed, and could have owned a new 57 Ford

Not only have I never heard, but I've never seen any Ford with a welded up hole for the brake adjuster. Brake Self Adjusters were first introduced in 1960. The system was a PITA for some, and only "adjusted" the brakes when the vehicles were backed up and the brakes applied several times. Rust and corrosion did many in. Today, of what's left out there in old Fordville...prolly half the cars/trucks have had them removed.
What does replacing the shoes have to do with brake adjuster holes? Those brake shoes hadda be mighty small to fit through brake adjuster holes!
First year for self adjusting brakes on Ford passenger cars=1960
First year for self adjusting brakes on F Series trucks = 1964

I agree with ya Bill. How would ya get the drum off to replase the shoes if ya couldn't back them off?
Damn...forgot all about that...many a Ford was towed because the adjusters backed out all the way, seizing the drums....The things never worked to expectations. A Ford "Better Idea."
Ford had one of their all time "Better Ideas" in 1967. "If self adjusters weren't bad enough..ask any owner of a 1967 T-Bird how much they liked "Rolling Door Locks!"
Yes Sir, you bet...Ford had a better idea. Once the car passed 8 MPH, the doors would automatically lock. Great idea till the cars went to a car wash. Car Wash = White Wall Tires = Spin Tires to Clean W/Walls = Doors Lock = Keys Inside = Engine Running!

I have a 93 GMC Safari and the adjuster holes have a knock out on them.
I will have to chisel it off so I can adjust the brake to get the drum off.
I have seen rubber replacements for the knock out.
I never had a problem with the self adjusters if set up properly. They worked very well. Of course if someone slapped one together without lubrication and with worn parts they did not work...
