Hi guys, I have a 1990 Bronco with a 5.8L V8. My thermostat just stopped working yesterday. I was wondering if It's ok to remov ethe thermostat and never put one back. Is this better for the engine. By the way I live in AZ. It never gets below 45degrees here!!
A thermostat should be installed, even in Arizona. If the truck never heats up to operating temperature, then it will waste gas for one thing, and possibly fail emissions inspections.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Dec-02 AT 00:38 AM (EST)]Ditto to everything JBronco said. EFI engines will run in warm-up mode for ever with no thermostat. Which means that as long as the engine is still "cold" to the computer it will run much richer causing higher emmissions and greater risk of ignition component failure not to mention the excessive crud build-up on valvetrain components from all the extra fuel.
Actually, it will cause the truck to overheat in the summer. Having no restriction in the cooling system will let the water flow to fast to transfer heat. Don't be cheap. Spend $5, and get a decent t-stat.
