460 oil cooler question

I am putting a new oil cooler on my truck. The cooler comes with a thermostatically controlled adapter. I don't have room room to install that. Pus I would rather us the factory oil filter adapter anyway. To my knowledge the factory never had a thermostat switch on the engine oil cooler did they? Is it really necessary to have a thermostat control on the engine oil? I was going to just direct oil flow to the cooler all the time. To my knowledge isn't that how the factory did it? Any ideas or suggestions?

The thermostat is apart of the oil filter sandwich adapter in the kit you bought. I think to install this sandwich adapter you would need to leave the stock oil filter adapter in place, then install the sandwich adapter to it. You can't even install an oil filter without the stock adapter, because the oil filter would hit the frame from the position on the side of the engine block.
