My 6.0L Excursion tanked today...

I was on the way home from a business trip about 100miles from home when my RPMs went from (highway running ~70mph) 2K to 2.4K and then back and forth a few times. Then what seemed like a dull 'thud'. Not knowing what a turbo failure sounded like, I assumed that was it as the engine was still running but with little power to hold speed. Eventually the RPMs kept dropping, it felt like I was running on 6 cylinders, and then it gave up the fight.

On the phone with my SD I tried to crank it over but no fire. Tried again and after holding ignition longer it started to chug to a sporadic running...like on 4cylinders. Limped about 1/4 to exit ramp and shut her down.

Long story shorter, the closest dealership has diagnosed as a failed fuel pump. No fuel in one of the rails and some testing is what I remember them saying.

Luckily, this is another item covered under Ford 5yr/100K. I just had to pay for towing and a rental to get a co-worker and me home. And now to go get her next week...

Have a great weekend all!

I guess I should ask...any potential adverse affects from running the short distance with a failed/failing fuel pump?

I'd be prepared for some injector failure. They don't like to be starved of fuel. I had a little experience with this when I had my 04.

Good luck.

Well, 7 of the injectors are new since about October of 2006.

I thought the general rule of fuel pumps was that they either work, or don't? I was kind of baffled that you could still get the engine to run, although poorly, with a bad fuel pump.

I'm not sure. I've read where others said they only had to pay the $100 deductible and that covered tow and fix, but the Ford Roadside Assist lady said it wasn't under the 'service agreement'. I had to buy a $69 package from Ford Roadside assist and as far as I know right now, that covered my tow.

Honestly, I just wanted to get the thing towed to the closest dealer and get my co-worker on his way home.

the way warranty will pay for towing within the 5/100k, you have to front the money before anything is done. now if the issue will be covered under the warranty, you should be refunded by either ford or the dealer.

Thanks BTH. Do you (or anyone) how I go about getting in touch with Ford to get the reimbursement? I'm 95% sure the servicing dealer had nothing to do with the towing.

And while you may be looking at this thread BTH, is there any strong concerns I should have about the injectors (or any other component) after this incident?

Thanks for your help.

well, if you called the tow truck and not the dealer, call the customer service center. if the dealer calls the tow truck for you, then the dealer would have reimbursed you.

now, low fuel pressure will take out injectors in a skinny minute. but being you have almost new injectors anyway, i dont think you have much to worry about. just go drive the snot out of it and make sure it doesnt hesitate or skip and you should be fine.

I called Ford Roadside Assistance, paid them $69 (so far) and they called the tow service.

The dealership called and said the Excursion is ready. New fuel pump. I asked if they did a power-balance test, or any tests, to see if the injectors were OK. They said they did and everything is fine. Hopefully that is the case.
Now to get 100miles up the road to get it...
