I am having troubles getting my 360 running. Rebuilt it and i am new to this so i don't know what to do. Put the Distributor in with it on TDC and its pointing to #1 on the cap. I went ahead and put a 4 bbl on it and just having troubles. It will start idle alright (Kinda fast) and i will hear a lil back fire every once in a whillle. If i give it any gas it back fires out of the carb and then dies. It has no power when i give it gas dosen't rev up like it should. The carb is an eledbrock 4 bbl (Model # 1406 600 cfm). Just getting frusterated becase i don't know what to do LOL. i have read on here that you may need to put it so many degrees BTC? Dunno thouh. Any help would be greatly appreaticed.
Mechanical and vacuum advance working plus hooked up to ported nipple on the carb? Start with inital at 8 degrees BTC then go from there and tune idle mixture.
Does your timing stay put or does it jump around ? I just went thru all this on my 390 replaced the dist, timing came in,then I had to increase the jet size on the accelerater pump nozzel and the primarys no more backfiring thru the carb.I also had no power with timing set at 6deg like the book calls for so now I'm set at 10deg adv and seems to pull good I may still go 12deg gonna have to play with that .
Set the timing at 10 BTDC and adjust the idle down as low as possible. if it won't idle down, to 600-700 RPM, that is a very good indication of a vacuum leak. Vacuum leak can also cause backfires through the carb.
Would really suggest if you dont already have them, getting a timing light and vaccum gauge. http://www.centuryperformance.com/vacuum.asp if nothing else this is great reading. These tools should narrow things down, hopfully exposing the culprit.
Sounds more like a vacuum issue. Check the hoses (all) mine did this after rebuilding the carb and fogetting a hose. Didnt idle to well as it was a large hose that was left off but it would pop tyhrough the carb like a shotgun flames and all...
Hmm,
I think its just getting to much fuel, well start it and it will do alright then it will like shoot some fuel out of the carb and die. On the metering rod do i have to change the actual rod? or how do i adjust it?
Well on my Holly street avenger the accelerator jets are held in by one screw thru the top just under the choke plate, just have to be careful you dont drop things in the intake, also be sure the needle valve under the jets doesn't stick to the bottom when you pull it off.
I would also check your firing order. If maybe #7 & 8 were crossed it could cause the backflash. Usually if it backfires (backflash) through the carb it is either extrememly lean (no acc pump or possibly a huge vacuum leak that may also be contributing to the high idle), retarded ignition timing, or possibly even one of you pushrods is not seated in it's lifter or rocker arm, most likely a exhaust valve pushrod.
OK,
Got some good news and some bad. Went and got a new Holly 600cfm and it works great. I can now tap the gas and it revs up!!!!!!! But i think i am still dealing with a timing Issue i listen to the tail pipe and i can hear back fires.(Not big but it has a nice rumble then pop pop then a nice rumble the pop pop Not loud or anything but still getting it. I am still getting a little ping in my engine ((((Hopefully from the timing still being off a lil))) Got any mroe suggestions. LOL thanks for all your help and patience.
You can not adjust the timing by ear and do it right unless you have years of experience. Since you don't, get a timing light. FYI, pinging usually means timing too far advance and that will destroy your motor.
