After all these fine answers, the short answer is ...because round ones weren't invented yet...

I don't know about now but when I was younger square nails were used in tongue and grove flooring, and were called flooring nails.
They were driven in above the tongue at an angle.(angel) Which is the right spelling???

And wings have degrees...the circle is complete and my head asplodes.

Wouldn't it be "some Angels had degrees"? Oh, I guess we can't get too far into that without taking it to the Club forum...

Thanks for the correction.
It was late, past my bedtime, and I was very tired.

Special square nails where used for attaching Horse Shoes. Then they figured how
to incorporate them the building structures.

I grew up in a 200 y/o house, and there was a huge anvil in the cellar. We found a big box of square nails that were made on that anvil. There was a square hole in the anvil, with a recess for shaping the head. What I want to know is, how did they make a small square hole in that anvil 200 years ago?
