tv repair

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone out there has any experience repairing tv's. I have a 27" rca that is discolored on the center like it's magnetized. (kind of pinkish and off colored). Just wondering if there are anyfixes that I can do at home with a basic tool set.

It might have lost it's purity but you could try a degausser on it anyway. I wouldn't even open the back 'cause there's basically nothing you can do without the right training/equipment. How old is the set?

Remember the days when you would pull all the tubes out and check them at the corner drug store? Funny how the tube tester would say they are all bad!

My hobby is fixing TVs, and anything electronic. Sounds like your TV's CRT has picked up a charge. You can try degaussing it. A soldering GUN works well
(not a soldering iron) because it's basically a transformer, with large electro-magnetic fields. Start with the soldering GUN on, moving it in circular patterns next to the front of the CRT (be carefull not to burn or melt anything). Continue moving in a circular pattern, while gradually moving the soldering GUN away from the front of the CRT. Once you have the soldering gun 2 - 3 feet back from the front of the CRT, you can turn it off.

anything to use besides a soldering gun? I have a soldering iron but not a gun, I also have various drills ext that I could use the motors from but I don't know if that will work. As for the age of the tv I don't know I picked up for $2.00 from a fleamarket.

Yes, you can try a drill. To test it, with the TV on, turn the drill on in front of the CRT. If the electro-magnetic field is sufficient, you will see a sunburst type of color pattern being created in the picture from the drill. (DO NOT put a drill bit in the drill, and be careful with the rotating chuck!!).

Good luck!!!

A bulk tape eraser will work too if you have one of them. Has the set been moved recently? Most late-model sets have a built-in degausser that works when you first turn it on (they're usually weak though) Try turning on your set for a minute, turn it off for 5 minutes and turn it on for a minute again. Do this about 10 times and see if it clears up any.

Got a change there is a small yellow dot in the center of the screen now, I think I didn't quite have a big enough feild I thought things were working as I did what you described but the picture snaped back to before when I shut off the drill. The color paterns were being shoved arround before though.

Try it again but make sure the drill is way the hell away from the TV when you shut off the drill.

Yes, make sure you get the drill back far enough that you don't see any color patterns when you turn the drill off.....
