if you refill the high pressure oil reservior it may take about 1 or two minutes worth of cranking. but only crank for 30 seconds at a time max!! also yes you can start the truck with the valve cover off. the oil will not squirt.

where is the high oil pres. reservoir? do you have a pic?
the reservior is under the plastic engine cover. top front of the motor between the alt and a/c compressor. it is an aluminum housing with a allen head or 1/4 inch square drive plug in the top on the drivers side. the housing is about 2 inch by 6 inch. directly behind the housing will be the fuel filter housing.
It was funny when I did mine I just purged the cylinders 2 different times for 30 seconds with the 4 plugs disconnected with the starter after I got most of the oil/fuel out of back cylinders. Then checked the hpop res and it was still full. When I was all done double checking everything I jumped in and it started within 10 seconds.
