the taurus is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. will rename its slow-selling Five Hundred model the Taurus, a name Ford previously used for a car that became the nation’s top-seller, two company officials said Tuesday.

The officials spoke to The Associated Press on the condition they not be identified by name because the official announcement had not yet been made.

The Taurus, considered by some the car that saved Ford, revolutionized the way autos look and feel when it was introduced in 1985.

While they are at it, maybe they could rename the Expedition "Bronco", the Escape a "Bronco II", the Focus would become the "Escort" and the Crown Vic would revice the old "LTD" name.

On a serious note, if they are going to call the 500 the Taurus, they better be able to put their money where their mouth is. The Taurus was a good, solid workhorse of a car (except for that whole headgasket thing). I wouldn't want to see a car reputation get damaged like when they called that little POS car a Mustang II......

Alan was hot because they let the taurus die a slow death, he felt it should of been updated and kept. I read this acouple of months ago, so this is no surprise.

Hey, it can't hurt. Most of todays car buyers don't know what a Ford 500 was but they are familiar with the Taurus name. The 500 (now Taurus) is a solid, great value car that has some european styling.

There is a reason most buyers don't know what a 500 is, lack of advertising. I seem to recall when the car first came out there were a few TV ads, haven't seen one for it in what seems like forever in this area.

i have been in one for a ride, its nice.

we can all sit here and think of ideas to turn around sales, and people at ford get paid to do the same thing, but i hate to say it and i hope i am completely wrong but maybe its just the name ford.

mustang im sure is fun to drive, trucks seem to be great, i cant speak for the fusion, or focus, they have pioneered the gas guzzling suvs.

so where is the problem?

it may have been or is very deep inside the company, and it might be to late to help pull them out, the consumer is the only one who can.

i cant see them leaning towards over seas sales to help pull them out, but at the same time im pissed for them not offering me all available options with the ranger, yet you can get other options on other soils.

to me thats not fare, yet i understand politics, policies, and ideas behind profitibility with certain makes and whats offered. but i dont buy the fact that they dont offer 4dr ranger, because you can have a 4dr sport trac which aint a truck and out of my price range, even though i drove one and yes it drive very nice.

I gotta admit, it is a "Bold" move. Definetely one of new CEO Mulally's brain childs. In that respect it is quite an intriquing decision, coming from someone who is pretty much a Ford "outsider" but a person who fully understands the importance of broad-based marketing. You have to admit that the name change is going to get a lot of publicity, at least short term, and it will bring back a nameplate people everywhere are familiar with.

The 500 is a fine car. Whatever criticism there has been is that (1) it's underpowered compared to it's intended competition, and (2) it isn't "BOLD" enough looking, particularly in front. As far as I know, Ford has been working to address these critiques with a little bit sportier look and the 3.5L Duratec. We'll what happens.

P.S. Now that the Taurus is back, how about new SHO version? Drop in the new Yamaha/Volvo 4.4L DOHC V8 w/6 speed auto and AWD, beef up the suspension, add some true sport wheels and tires, maybe some small styling tweaks and.........

The Taurus name has gotten old and lost it's luster. Only old farts recognize the 500 name brand. Way back in the 60's 500 meant something along with the cool name Galaxy, how neat was that?

I test drove the 500 back in 2005 and was not impressed. If you are looking for a large family type car or an el cheapo(feel not price) limo then maybe the 500 would work for you. It is based upon one of the Volvo chassis and has an adequate but lack luster drive train. Supposedly Ford is improving the power.

The pitch given me when I test drove is that it was a large economical Luxury class car with the safety of a Volvo.

In my mind it might appeal to older people say 60+, or those who want a really big front wheel driver. I would prefer a Crown Vic over this model.

If they change it to a Taurus, I don't think it will help a whole lot, but maybe the Taurus name is still worth something.

Just my opinion,

Jim Henderson

Peeps get obcessed with hp numbers, it's all a head game. I had a 99 taurus with the 3.0 dohc, auto on the floor and dual mufflers and that car would fly. At 85 it seemed like 50 mph and had great excelleration. The speed limit in most places is still 55 unless your on the interstate, then it's 65, maybe 70. I can do those numbers easily with my my focus. 150 hp will get you a speeding ticket anywhere in this country. I'm a horse power person my self, but realistically, it's as useless as nipples on a bore hog and for a 4 door family sedan, it don't need 600 hp just because the japanese claim to have 600 hp. It's a head game. mine is bigger than yours type thing, but has no purpose in the real word except for bragging rights. I hop all my vehicles, not because thier not fast enough or have enough power, but because it's fun, a hobby you might say. However, my jeep, focus and ranger all have plenty of power to get me in trouble or killed.
