The Fusion was originally to be called the Futura, which was last used in North America as the name of a two-door version of the Fairmont. Ford, however, lost a trademark lawsuit to the Pep Boys auto parts store, which has a line of tires under the Futura brand. American trademark law generally considers a name abandoned if the owner does not use it for three calendar years and the long history of the name in the Ford line did not impress the court.

(Not exactly an original source, I know, but it is accurate).

Read my post again Sir, not once did I say anything about costing one American a job. Quite the contrary. Y'all should know me better by now!

Where did I post about costing jobs? Creating them, yes.

I'm not blaming the government now...I'm blaming the government, the Big 3 and the UAW back in the 1960's and later 1970's by allowing the Japanese to get a foothold here....Scott Free. They could have imposed tariffs...after all, while the Japanese were selling product here tariff free, it was not (and still isn't) true in Japan, where the US automakers had to pay huge tariffs to sell their product there.

Fair is fair...vehicles sold here should have been under the same restrictions as they were sold in Japan. If something had been done once, if the Big 3 and the UAW had given a damn, maybe our economy inre to the Auto Biz wouldn't be reeling from all the crappola it's under today.

I couldn't agree more, it seems that they were not thinking into the future. Only on how they can get the best deal to benefit each other in the short term. The Japanese manufacturers have flown under the radar until now!

Since Japanese, et al are well established here now, and have built or are building new plants, which employ US workers. I have no problems with that at all.
It's all good with me Number, it's amazing what you can learn when you can have a civil conversation with someone! You know what mean!

thank god for police sales over the years for the crown vic, are they still making crown vics today??

here in florida there is alot of older vic's still on thr road but all the new police vehicles are G.M. (impalla's, and tahoe's)

Would this hurt ford by not having to mass produce a vehicle for police services, considering how many ford police vehicles there has been on the road over the years??

what percent of profit have police departments been involved in???

No idea of profit, but fleet sales usually don't make any manufacturer rich.

Crown Vics, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars are still being produced. These three are built off the Panther chassis. The Vic's and Grand Marquis date to 1979. The Town Car dates to 1980. Despite being restyled, they are three sisters under the skin. The design/engineering of these three dates to 1976.

70,000 police vehicles are sold yearly. It's well known among police departments, etc that front wheel drive cars do not hold up well when used in severe service.

Smiggs:

I've never Wikied anything. Years of reading Automotive News, trade journals, auto rags...er mags, and having a library full of automotive/transportation history books...is where my info comes from.

Previous Futuras: Lincoln Futura Dream Car of 1954; Falcon Futura 1962/69; Fairmont Futura 1978/83. I'm still wondering if the Futura name was scheduled for the Fusion. Where did the 500 name come to be the name for the new larger Ford FWD? I know that I read something, somewhere about a Futura 500. Seems odd to me that only the 500 name was used for this car, if it was once attached to the Fusion. (500 is a dumb meaningless name for a car...IMHO).

well hopefully they will stop using impallas and go back to ford,,,,,not that a ride to the big house would be better in a ford, but better for ford in the end

Several departments around me are switching to the new Dodge Charger. There have been many reports of the '06 Crown Vics accelerating out of control - including a recent fatality.

I'd rather get a ride to jail in a Ford any day.....

The fusion doesn't need to be called the new taurus, it's selling well enough as a fusion, the 500 needs the help.

The main reason is Dodge is actively pursuing the Police Cruiser market, for the first time since the 1970's. Plus rumors are rife the CV's are about done.

While I haven't read of the accelerator problem, the exploding gas tanks have been widely reported. The CV is after all, a design from the 1970's, and Ford has just let the car die. The only major styling change was in 1992.

For many of us the acceleration is the fun. High speed is just frosting which you can't eat very often.

Just my lawbreaking (no 55 stay alive for me) acceleration addicted opinion,
Hey Jim, how about a 550 hp supercharged "Taurus GT-R", would that float your boat?

I love this web site!!! So many opinions and I can't get enough. Anyway- isn't it amazing how most problems can be traced back to the govt. Maybe when one or all of the big three file ch. 13 the gov. can use billions of our tax dollars to bail 'em out like they have delta. This is also a good time to enlighten people to the fact that unions are no longer needed in this country and are doing nothing but holding the working people and the economy back. Just imagine how different things would be if unions were dissbanded and NAFTA was done away with. Opinions? Thanks guys.

Until you have worked for a governmental agency where politics is rampant and somebody's nephew is looking for your job, I don't think you can say with any kind of knowledge that unions aren't needed in this country.

Have you ever had a union job? A non-union job?

I do have an opinion but for the sake of not getting kicked off this site for using profanity I will remain quiet.

all in all is ford going to turn a profit in 07?

will the 500 be ok this year and not hurt them to much, until it gets named the taurus, and when that happens is it going to be enough to save the car or will it get scraped all togeather for a redisign in a couple of years.
