I have an '01 Sport Trac with the 4.0 SOHC engine. According to the repair manual I bought, there is an Intake Air Temp (IAT) sensor that should be located in the intake tube, between the air box and the throttle body, and close to the MAF sensor. I looked, but there is no such sensor on my intake tube. Since I am having a cold start issue, I wanted to verify that this sensor was working, but I can't locate it. Could it be part of the MAF???
The only sensors on or near that inlet tube/throttle body that I can find are the throttle position sensor, the MAF, and the idle air control valve. Below the throttle body is the coolant temp sensor and the sending unit for the temp gauge. I've identified these according to the pics in the repair manual, but the IAT sensor is just not where it shows it to be. I just wondered if maybe Ford decided to combine it with the MAF somehow, because the picture shows the two being right next to each other on the intake tube.
Yeah, all good suggestions. I'll check the air filter housing. I went to the local parts store and they list an IAT sensor for my year and model. I was able to look at a closer picture of it, so at least now I know what I am looking for. Good point about the code and check engine light. I checked to see if there were any codes stored in the computer while I was at the parts store, but there was nothing. At this point, it's starting to look like a fuel issue. A friend suggested I buy some starting fluid and shoot some into the intake before starting. He said that if it starts, but dies right away, that would suggest a weak fuel pump, since I don't have a pressure gauge to test it properly. I'll try that in the morning and see what happens.
I tried cycling the key 5 times before attempting to start this morning, but it still didn't want to start. I sprayed some starting fluid in the intake tube and tried again, and even then it didn't fire right away. It took a couple of cranks (which it kinda acted like it wanted to start) before it actually started. The starting fluid did keep me from having to crank on it forever though. Not sure what this means, really. Any other thoughts?
Yep....already replaced that. Here's the list of stuff I have checked/replaced: MAF sensor(tested ok), ECT sensor(replaced), Intake Manifold gaskets(replaced), IAC Valve(tested ok), replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, and fuel filter. Next on my list of things to do is to check the fuel pressure with a pressure gauge and clean the MAF sensor. I got in it this morning and it fired right up...no starting fluid and no cycling of the key needed. The only thing that was different than my normal routine was the fact that I didn't get home until about 10:30 last night, so it didn't sit for as long. However, this doesn't always make a difference. Here's a question though: If the fuel pump is weak, is it always weak, or could it be intermittently weak? In other words, could there be times when it functions normally, and other times when it doesn't? It seems like my problem is really intermittent, though lately it has been happening more with the cold weather.
