I Just had my truck smog checked and it passes everything with flying colors except for the NO (PPM) (Nitrous Oxide parts per million). Those readings were pretty high. Anyone else fail because of this? What's the solution? I don't feel like paying $100 for someone to tell me it's a $20 part. How would I be able to tell if it's the catalytic converter? [updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-02 AT 02:53 PM (EST)]Well, turns out that 4 of the 5 vacume lines way behind the upper intake manifold were completly broken and burnt, one of which goes directly to the EGR valve. I took off the manifold, replaced all of the lines, and even replaced the fuel pressure regulator while I was back there. I will re-test soon. Thanks

If those lines wre bunrt or heat-brittle check for a loose or broken air injection check valve back there. There is one in the air injection crossover pipe that runs behind the intake and a hose from the smog pump. I had this check valve crack open and it was letting hot exhaust back up through it and it did the same thing (burnt and crispered) the vaccuum lines back there. Also wreaked havoc my emmissions since one bank of cylinders wasn't getting fresh air from the smog pump.
Thanks for the heads-up. I actually wrapped the lines in aluminum foil to help prevent the melting from happening again, but I will also check the air injection line. Thanks again
Fixing those bad lines will probably take care of the problem, but if you need it, you can a slight further reduction in NOx by retarding the timing a few degrees - just for the smog test, of course.
Thanks for the advice, but now I have another problem. After fixing the lines, the truck runs smoother, but has less power than before. Is this because the EGR is actually working now? I actually removed the upper intake manifold to replace the broken lines and thought that I might have a small vacume leak, but since the engine runs very smooth, I don't think that's it, I don't know. Any ideas? Thanks
i had this same problem. i could not get my truck smoged for about 7 months past it's due date.
the problem on mine was that the line leading from the back of my egr valve was completely clogged up with gunk..
the mechanic used a drill motor with a bent piece of wire to roto rooter the thing out..
it passed with flying colors after that.
