I have a 2005 Explorer with 30K miles. The front cigarette lighter does not work but the back one does work. Different fuses I assume.
I need to check the fuse. Question, how do you get to the fuse box which is to the left of the steering wheel? It looks really hard to get to kneeling down under the dash. Do we have to remove some bolts or should a panel snap out?
Its still tough. I removed two 7mm screws on the bottom of the panel. I figured the front panel would wiggle free. It looks like there are 2 pins holding the panel but I could not jog them loose. There must be a way to free those pins. I didn't force anything. When I called the dealer service dept. on Saturday, the guy did not know how to remove the panel. He had to look it up onthe computer. He came back to me and said pry the panel free with a screwdriver. Doesn't seem to work that way.
Finally fixed, here is what happened. I went to the dealer and he said he would show me how to get to the fuse. The mechanic who came out to meet with me was a guy I know.He brought me into the garage, looked it up in a phone book size manual and found the fuse was under the front hood in that little box that pops up so easily.
It blew my mind! In the drivers manual, the fuse was called power point #1.
Why couldn't they call it front cigarette lighter?
The mechanic said the box under the hood is for the power points! What does that mean to the novice like me who loves to tinker and learn about his car??
In the drivers manual the fuse that said cigarette lighter was shown to under the dash. I asked the mechanic how you get the panel off that leads to the fuses under the dash. He said you don't, the mechanics bend over upside down and they do get to the fuses.
What a crappy manual. What a crappy place for fuses.
open your owners manual and it will have a description of how to open fuse box and what fuse it may be.
this was the first post and if you would have read the manual you would have seen that you have a fuse box and a power distribution box and what each place in these was for.
by not doing this you added a lot of grief to your life.
do not get angry at me either for pointing this out.
Thank you for your help and I appreciate your advice. I do not know alot about cars but I am interested in learning. You helped me learn one more thing. I like your little guy with the sign.
