just purchased 88' 351. After about a week noticed ticking from the engine. The noise started after the enging is warmed up for a while and in idle. when the engine reves the ticking increases but not a consistant pace very irraticle. when put into drive the noise subsides until i reach about 2000 rom then i hear it againm however it comes and goes. seconly, i noticed oil in the air filter when i changed it today; coming from the breather hose i guess. any idea what causes either problem and how long until i need a new engine??
Don't rule out the possibility of an exhaust leak. the fact that the sound is erratic and not constant sounds more like a leak casued by changes in backpressure. Manifold gaskets, donut gaskets, or the ever dreaded manifold crack that seems to plauge the driver's side of 302' and 351's. My 92 had the same problems.
The oil in the air filter can be several things. Bad PCV valve, dirty or missing breather filter (paper fanfold filter under the air filter in the airbox). Mine was missing the filter when I bought it. If these things are in tact and not soaked with oil, I'd be confused for one thing but more over, I'd be concerned that there were worse problems. I would check the breather and PCV first replace as necessary and see how long it takes before you get an oil soaked breather filter if at all.
