New noise

So, I have a new noise.
It’s been a few drives since I had it at the dealer for its first oil change.
I say drives because it sat for six days in my garage after the change while I was out of town until I drove it Wednesday evening.
Today was the first time I had my window down while driving (since the oil change) and noticed this “ticking” noise.
I don’t hear it with the windows up and I have to be driving by something that echo’s sound (fence, trees, etc.).

I’ll attempt to explain the sound without sounding dumb.
One example is if you have a piece of gravel stuck in a tread of the tire as it rotates and hits the pavement. I’m sure we’ve all heard this sound at one time or another.

Another sound example I’ll provide, while I’m driving it’s the sound of an older gasoline engine working hard. I’ve always explained that as a loud ticking noise (chugging up a hill). Only this is much quieter but same concept.

It’s not a rock because it does this occasionally while in park, idling.
It becomes much more noticeable with more occurrences when I engage SEIC @ 1400 RPM.
Tick, tick, tick, tick….stops….tick tick…..stops….tick tick tick tick tick tick tick…..stops….you get the idea.
In other words, a random pattern but often enough.

My educated guess is this is coming from under the engine compartment on the driver’s side.
I can’t hear it if I have the hood open and I’m standing over the engine. Too much clutch fan noise and diesel clatter. I hear it best when I’m below the driver’s side mirror.
I made a recording with my camera but all you hear is the diesel engine and not this random noise.
Only noticeable by the human ear.
I don't think it is the engine but either something loose or some other moving part.

I’m supposed to be called next week by the dealer when I can have the flash uploaded and I’ll have the tech’s listen to this but wanted to see if I could get ideas first.
I do understand this is not much to go on and long winded.
If I can get the noise extracted from the recording, I’ll make it accessible to everyone.

The engine flash has a update that quites the injector pump in certain conditions - That may be what you are hearing.

Agree with GMUGNIER... Theres been reports of a ticking noise coming from the injector pump and Ford was going to investigate but I never heard if there was a fix. So far it's considered a normal noise.

Now that both of you have said that, I do remember reading about that somewhere.

Yes, I don't forget.
I've never had the noise before. It's very noticeable.
If it's SOP, why would it randomly start or since after a service, not random?

I think it is a normal and random noise that comes and go's and should become less noticeable as more miles are put on the oil.

My 2011 does this as well, I'm still on my original oil from when I got the truck new, only 3500 miles on the oil so far. I had the same noise up until around 2700 miles, and at present, I do not hear it all, however, when i go in for an oil change, I do expect the noise to come back.
My '08 6.4 did the same thing after every oil change until approximately 2000 miles on the oil, then the noise went away.
Ford put out a TSB on the 6.4 saying this noise is normal and because the new engines are so quiet, the noise is more noticeable. So they say anyway.

Since my '08 did it, and now my 2011 does it, I can only guess, that based on what Ford said, this is a normal noise.

I'm sure others will jump in here saying their trucks don't do this, but again, I think it is a random noise (Anomaly). Like Ford said, some engines will make this noise and for what ever reason, other engines won't.

Just my 2 cents

I personally am not concerned, only because my '08 6.4 did the same thing after every oil change then quiet'd (grammar, sorry) down after roughly 1500-1700 miles on the oil.......but just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the infamous "Tick" after an oil change on their 2011's.

I did a ton of research on this when I had my '08 and even the GMC/Chevy and Dodge's all said that due to how quiet the new diesel's are, regardless of make, that noises which were drowned out by the louder/older engines are now becoming audible due to how quiet the new engines are.

I am no diesel expert by any stretch, so please, somebody correct me if I am putting out bad info......I use the forums for research, and do my best to avoid putting out any bad info.
