In my '96 there is an oil leak above/in front of the oil filter. The bracket where the oil filter is attached has something that looks like a pipe 2-3 inches in diameter going to the front of the truck. It looks like oil is coming from there and runing down the filter. What is this pipe and how do I fix the leak? Thanks.
that is the oil cooler. it a oil to coolant cooler. it uses the engine coolant to cool the engine oil. the ends of the cylinder are sealed by o-rings. the o-rings and the gaskets for the end housings are availible at the ford dealer. to replace the o-rings you need to remove the oil filter then un bolt bothe ends of the cooler. three bolts on the rear housing and 2 on the front housing. the front housing is best to go thru the wheel well witha long extension and ratchet. It is much easier to get the cooler out of the truck by unbolting the engine mount on that side and jacking the engine up an inch or two.
then once out seperate the housings from the cylinder. install new o-rings, clean the ousings up, and put some grease or oil on the o-rings and pu the housings back on. then reinstall in the truck. its all harder than it sounds but can be done with some tools and time.
