I have found a new problem with my '97 4x4 f150 and I'm hoping for something other than the worst. The mileage is unknow as it was supposed to have 30k on the tranny when I got it but who knows. It has always felt a little hard kicking into OD and down on the highway, but the other day as I stopped at a stop sign and the truck completly stopped and then it thumped. It felt like it was just under me. It was snowing bad so I thought nothing of it. But it has happend for 2 days now. The U-joints appear ok and the tranny fluid level is fine. Any ideas are really appreciated.
Oh almost forgot. I did just change my IAC because it would not idle. So obviously the truck idles higher now. Possibly it is the rear brakes hanging and letting off?
Hi ahall8, Consider checking your transmission mounts for broken rubber. Also consider servicing the transmission. Filter, fluid and such. You may not know how many miles are on the tranny but at least you'll know when it was last serviced. This will give you a chance to see if there are any foreign products in there too. All in all... I am also leaning toward the slip yolk clunk with "wgotthardt". Joe
I have rear drums. Thanks for the idea. Thats why I am hear. I'll probably change the pan and filter because it never hurts to take a look, but I'll also consider the slip yolk thanks a million.
Seeing IS believing. But remember, Believe nothing that you hear and 1/2 of what you see. Let me know what you find. Hey, keep your nose open for a smell of burned fluid too. Joe
try this part # at your locl ford store.. 5L3Z-19A506-A. this is the slip yoke grease that is suppose to fix the slip bump you feel when the truck comes to a rest.make sure you dont get the drive shaft out of phase when disassybling it.

I'm convinced that once the 'clunk' starts you are better off just replacing the part...I pulled my driveshaft off twice and lubed (once with the Ford spec grease, once with a thicker synthetic), both times it lasted less than a week. I then finally replaced the front yoke (and used the Ford grease), no 'clunk' since.
