transmission or differential problems or BOTH???

I have a 99 4.0L explorer sport w/ Auto tranny. The other day i noticed upon taking off that it felt like my transmission was a little rough, but i am not sure if its the tranny. I took it to a friends garage and put it on the hoist, and was looking around the underside. We did a few tests on the running gear and noticed that when the vehicle is engaged in 4 wheel drive and in drive, that you can actually stop the wheels from rotating, and also when i let it idle ( on the hoist) with the vehicle in Drive , when the brake is applied i get a pretty decent clunk sound, could this be a differential problem??

Also the other problem is, when the vehicle is parked on a slope and put into park, it wants to slip and the vehicle actually will roll away, i am stumped here???

Since you took it to friends garage with a lift, it sounds like your friend is a mechanic. I would think he could help diagnose better than on the web!

Where you able to stop BOTH wheels on each axle? Should be able to. If you stopped one wheel at a time, the power will transfer to the opposite wheel. This is normal and the problem with non-limited slip differentials.

If your transmission will not go into park, check and make sure the selector mechanism is working correctly. Loose and missadjusted cables, mounts, and mechanisms can hinder the transmission from fully engaging into park. It can also cause shifting problems if the transmission is not properly engaged in the selected gear. The problem can be at the steering column as well as the at the transmission.
