Hey just to let you know that the turbo in the auction is an EARLY 99 turbo. It has the very small compressor housing denoting the earlier compressor, but the circular turbine inlet flange which means it is not a turbocharger off a 94.5-97. It's a good deal if you have a late 99-newer compressor housing and backplate. The wheel is the same, but like mentioned, it needs to be changed out. Add an ATS housing with a stock backplate, and a stock compressor wheel and that is a good buy. Oh yes remember to get the EBPV downpipe-mount flange modified (ask Jeremy) or delete the EBPV.
I would think that the BB spools faster being that it is a ball bearing turbo. If I remember correctly the BB can handle up to 39psi of boost. However, the van turbo can provide enough air to support 450rwhp. But, for the best bang for the money the van turbo is the way to go. Plus the van turbo comes with a 1.15 a/r exhaust housing, which makes it great for lowering EGTs. The ATS intake housing is used to eliminate surge, the WW can be used in conjunction but its not necessary unless you want that WW sound. The stock wheel will flow more air.
Salvage yard is a good start, just make sure you rebuild it ($100). Most guys say its pretty easy. I got mine of Ebay for a song and dance. Unless your planning to go over 450rwhp the van turbo will suit your needs.
What other mods are necessary to get to the 450 range? i have the intake, 4" exhaust, guages, and the dp-tuner... but i'm hungry for more!
That all depends on wheather you have PMRs (powdered metal connecting rods)! Some have successfully exceeded the 400rwhp limit of these rods. However, some have broken them with less HP.
But I would think that a dual HPOP, 530 hybrid injectors, regulated fuel return system and a van turbo or better. Either way, you will need Jody to reburn your tuner for big oil and for PMRs if you have them. Of coarse, there is the tiny problem of your tranny staying together, thats where Brian comes in. After all that, your broke but happy.
Rampage if you get a dual HPOP i don't see the benefit of hybrid injectors. If you have big oil, then use some pretty heavily modified stage two singles, or BD codes 530s on mild tuning for a reliable 450hp. A fuel system, H2E turbo, and other small supporting mods would be a must i would think. Or you could get Hybrid injectors and put the $2500 in big oil to an H2E.
