E-Series Van Turbo?

I was reading in Diesel World magazine that a guy put a stock turbo from an E-Series van in his f350, he claimed it to be as good as a garret BB turbo. Has anyone done this and if so what are your thoughts.

Is it as good as the BB turbo. Where did you get yours? Is it safe to get one from a salvage yard and add the ATS housing and wicked wheel?

It won't spool up as fast, and it has a larger exhaust housing than the BB, for more topend flow. It is also rebuildable for less than $100 in parts.

I would think that the BB spools faster being that it is a ball bearing turbo. If I remember correctly the BB can handle up to 39psi of boost. However, the van turbo can provide enough air to support 450rwhp. But, for the best bang for the money the van turbo is the way to go. Plus the van turbo comes with a 1.15 a/r exhaust housing, which makes it great for lowering EGTs. The ATS intake housing is used to eliminate surge, the WW can be used in conjunction but its not necessary unless you want that WW sound. The stock wheel will flow more air.

Salvage yard is a good start, just make sure you rebuild it ($100). Most guys say its pretty easy. I got mine of Ebay for a song and dance. Unless your planning to go over 450rwhp the van turbo will suit your needs.

Got the Van Turbo off Ebay...and bought the ATS housing from hight tech turbo. Really no need for the Wicked Wheel with the ATS housing...unless you want more whistle.

I picked up a van turbo at the junk yard for $350, its in good shape too. I got the rebuild kit off ebay for $100, also got the non EBPV pedistall for $100 from Long Island Diesel Performance, and the exhaust housing adapter from Beans Diesel Performance for $100. An if/when I get surge ill add the ATS housing. Rebuilding the turbo was straight forward, I just needed to know the torque specs and where to use loctite. For what I want out of my truck the van turbo should be enough. I want to get my truck into the 4-500hp range but cant do it all at once, so I can use the van turbo now while im still stock but have the ability to add power and not have to worry about upgrading my turbo when the rest of my mods catch up. Also on a side note, ive got forged rods and am not trying to tear into my motor anytime soon, so getting something bigger "as far as the turbo" wouldnt be the best for me.

Keep your eyes on eBay. I got a van turbo there last year for $150, plus a rebuild kit for another $100 and I've essentially got a new van turbo. I also put an ATS housing on mine.

I can't give a first hand comparison to the BB turbo, but I have no complaints about the van turbo. I have asked a well-known diesel tuner if I would see any benefit in switching to a BB turbo and he said I'm just as well off to stick with my van turbo.

How does this one look to you guys?

A good one or not. Also, what gains should I get by changing the stock turbo to this one?

I would have it rebuilt, but for the price that seems good.

I love my van turbo setup - works great and lowered the EGt's. Call beans Diesel for the exhaust adapter.

It looks to be ok, but like was said, definately rebuild it. You just never know. I originally put my van turbo on w/o rebuilding it and I ended up having to pull it a couple weeks later because the compressor wheel was hitting the housing.

Also, the best I can tell from the picture, it looks like a couple of the compressor blades might be bent - the trailing set at the 2 and 6 o'clock positions. So, a new compressor blade would be a good idea. You could use either a stock 99.5+ wheel or a WW; price should be about the same for both.

Edit: gains by using a van turbo are decreased backpressure which is easier on the engine, and you will no longer have a problem with turbo surge.

I called a local auto salvage yard today and they wanted $550 for a 2001 E350 van turbo. Still have to factor in the $100 rebuild. Can't count the ATS Housing cost, cause I'm going to get that regardless (that's what I tell myself anyway)

Call Beans diesel performance, if I remember correctly you can get a van turbo for @ $800. $550 seems kinda high and you still have to get the rebuild kit.
