Runaway Starter Problem

1978 F100 302

I know I read here before about this problem but a search did not put me on the issue. My starter continues to run after I release the key from the start position. It runs in all positions and the only way to kill it is to remove the battery cable. Any help will be appreciated!

Most likely a bad Bendix Drive. This is the device which when energized, cranks the engine. It is available as a separate part.

Original Ford Number (may be updated): C6VY-11350-A .. Motorcraft SD 175

Check starter solenoid too. I had a problem with truck not shutting off and it was the solenoid. Recently we had an f350 at the shop that starter stayed engaged, we did new starter and solenoid but then found out the ignition switch was causing the problem. So there are a few things to look into.

How long has the truck been sitting?

Sometimes after sitting too long...when staring the engine.. the starter drive will continue to clank because it can't travel back to normal position.

If the starter continues to actually CRANK with the engine running...the problem is more than likely the solenoid contact points won't release.

Replace it with a quality part.

Thanks guys for all your help. I put a solanoid (sp) switch on it and it cured the problem. Although I am told that this is a commom problem with Ford trucks I have never had it happen wth any of the trucks I have owned and I have had many over the years. Thanks again!

It's an age thing.
Electronic parts don't last a human lifetime in corrosion filled areas.
