Hey nathan, I was curious how hard all in all it was to do the frame for your truck? I have been contemplating getting this older merc i found, and trying to get the frame from my 77 for fit underneath. What is your opinion on this?
It's not terribly hard but it will be a slow process and will require a lot of space. I'm assuming this Mercury is a 1/2 ton and the 77 is a regular cab long box?
133" - 114" = 19" which isn't quite enough to eliminate the frame hump. So you will most likely have to mount your body 2-3" higher to match the box. You won't have to cut the cab however.
Now if you got the '68 F-350 frame from Snowking, then you would almost be ahead of the game. Just got to take the front and rear suspension from the 77 and bolt it on the frame. You will need to use the 77 front coil buckets since the 68 front coils aren't available anymore and too strong for your use. With the rear just swap in the rear leafs and hangers. The spring pads on the rear axle will have to be moved. The frame is already the correct width and it is totally flat which makes shortening it a breeze. 135" - 114" = 21 which have to be removed.
I was originally planning on using a '73-79 F-350 frame for my project but the 78 F-250 was tossed my way. Another note is the front track width is a lot wider. 59.5" to 66". The M-1 fenders just tuck the tires in. Hope this helps.
