Hey guys was wondering if I could get your opinion, which frame paint should I use. My frame does nor have rust, looking for something that is easy prep and not going to brake the bank.
I used tractor paint for my frame.Bought it at Tractor Supply for
something like $7.00 a quart.Turned out really nice.I sprayed it
on but it can be brushed also.
POR 15 is a moisture cured Urethane. Painting it over a light coat of rust actually helps it to bond and it is very durable (they use MCU it to paint the inside of steel water tanks and jet hanger floors) I used MCU to paint the green concrete floor in my garage and it has held up beautifully. I got it from Sherwin Williams industrial coatings div.
I started with the Eastwood Chassis Black but found out I could get the whole thing blasted and powder coated for $800. The chassis black had started to peel. I didn't have the ability to sand blast it first. Not as cheap as paint but has lasted much longer.
I went for the POR15 route, wire brush attachment on the angle grinder, then the three stage POR15 process. Below are some before, after wire brush, after POR15 photos. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, albeit POR15 is not the cheapest.
Sorry it took so long for the reply,I'm at work and thanks for the info. Might just try the tractor paint and see how that goes, down the line when I get more money will have it blasted and powder coated....stay tuned
John Deere Blitz Black in quarts or aerosol. Have used it over top of most every kind of primer imaginable. Sticks very well to Rustoleum primers that aren't fully cured. It's lasted on a number of my projects for 10+ years. Read about it in Hot Rod mag about 25 years ago. It's a fast drying satin black.
IMHO It depends on what you want to do with the truck. Many Years ago I Sand blasted, primed and painted a Frame with really expensive High Gloss enamel with special hardner added. I saw some show trucks done that way and it impressed me. Later on my daily driver I just wire brushed the frame and sprayed it with frame black (sort of like light undercoating). Held up great and no one ever complained about how it looked (it's a frame). Soo what I'm trying to say is you don't have to spend big bucks on your Frame (unless your gonna show) and can save it for the stuff everyone sees.
I'm using rustolem for mine, clean and grind the best you can, rustolem rust converte, rusty metal primer, then enamel base auto paint. All product is rustolem spray can from wallmart.
I'm cheap. I used rustolem, rusty metal primer than semi gloss black. I brushed it on. That is after many hours of wire brushing the frame first. The frame hasn't left the garage, but it seems to be holding up well to my working and banging around on it. Mine is going to be a driver, so I'm not real concerned about real pretty.
I used ERF paint. (end rust forever) it's demanding to use, smells awful being sprayed, but its tough as nails. Put a finish coat of Eastwood Frame Gloss Black. Looks sweet.
