phantom wipers fixed
with spray electrical contact cleaner (same stuff you use to clean your MAF). popped off the end cap of the multi-function switch, pushed in the end as if washer was in 'on' position, and liberally sprayed the contact cleaner into the switch. now there is no random washer/wiper operation.
some may find that doesn't work and maybe need to take the whole switch off to clean or replace it, but i thought i would try the above first before doing more invasive surgery.
