lost key
I figured no big deal-go to the local Ford dealer give them my VIN# or other unique info for the vehicle and outta there in 10 minutes.
WRONG!!!!
They said I need to have the car towed in so "they can access the chip"
Is this true ?
Is their another way I can avoid towing this beast into the dealer?
Any ideas-or suggestions appreciated.

If you have one set, and are looking for a second set, you can either take it to the dealership, or a locksmith, and again have the PATS read so a proper code can be downloaded into a new PATS key.
If you meant last set of spares, and you still have at least two properly programmed PATS keys, then you can purchase a blank PATS key from anywhere (I get mine from ebay), have them cut for free at any hardware store, and then program them yourself using the two keys you already have.

Unfortunately,I lost the only spare(and was too darn lazy to get other keys made when I lost my set of keys in a canoe dunking last summer!).
I really don't want to tow the vehicle to the dealer..Do most locksmiiths(in populous areas) have PATS Reading Systems?

but if you still had the 2 factory key sets your owners manual states how to program additional keys your self. i forget the number you can do.but the manual states how many more that way.

Do an ebay search "Excursion PATS" and you'll get more options. Either way, buy a couple (I've purchased approx 10 PATS keys for my vehicles off of ebay, they all work fine) blank PATS keys, have them cut at a hardware store, then program them yourself and save a chunk of cash.
Programming a PATS key:
1. Place first already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting the vehicle, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.
2. Within 5 seconds, insert your second already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting it, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.
3. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to OFF, insert the new key into the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting it, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.
The theft indicator light should go on for three seconds, after which the key will start the vehicle. Repeat this process, from the beginning, for each new key to be programmed.
When I went to my local OSH to have the keys cut, sometimes I'd get a guy who knew what he was doing and he'd just cut the key for me. Other times I'd get a rocket scientist who didn't want to cut my key because when he tested the key in their little doohicky, it showed as the chip being corrupted. It took time explaining to the guy the key hadn't been programmed yet, so the chip was "blank" and that was why the test showed it being corrupted.
I had to stifle a laugh when the guy told me to program the key first, then he'd cut it. When I explained the key needed to be cut before it could be programmed, he gave me a blank stare.
Anyway, just find a place that will cut if for you for free, then follow the directions above and as long as you always have more than two, you'll never be in trouble.
Spend $12 - $15 bucks on two keys, plus shipping (overcharged), and it's a lot cheaper than $178!

I just purchased a 2001 X and the owner only had one set of keys and couldn't find the spare set.
If I read your programming instructions, it seems I would need at least two existing programmed keys before I could program a new blank one?
What if I only have one existing working key?
What is the least expensive/reliable way to get spares given I have only one key?
Thanks for the info,
Carlton
I searched for forum for an answer to the question I posed to you and believe I found the answer -- sorry, I should have done the search first.
It seem to reprogram the key myself, I do indeed need two working programmed keys to begin with.
The post I found via the forum search gave a few alternatives.
Seems I'll have to make trip to the ford dealer to get it programmed.
I wonder if buying the OEM PATS blank on e-bay would be cheaper then the one sold by the dealership?
Thanks,
Carlton
Interesting thing is he had the key made by the VIN and had it ready when I showed up to program it. It doesn't look like my current key, but BOTH work fine in door locks and the ignition but the new one doesn't work in the tailgate. Weird, huh?!

You can try and take the dealership your own blank, already cut, to be programmed. But they may refuse to use it, citing some BS reason, because they want to make more money off of you by making you buy their overpriced blank.
