My truck threw the codes 172 and 176 tonight after I got back from the mountains. I lost my book with the codes explanations but according to a website they are as follows:
172: Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean - Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control
176 - Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean Left or Front HO2S - Fuel control
I had been at a normal altitude (where I live) for a while then shut off my truck for about 30 minutes at my house. Then took off from my place and the check engine showed up almost immediately. Has anyone had this happen before? Is this a bad O2 sensor? A confused O2 sensor from the changing altitudes? A combination of both? Thanks.
First disconnect the negative battery cable to reset codes. Then if the codes return after driving, replace the O2 sensor.
I'm sorry but that part is quite obvious. I guess my real question was: do O2 sensors usually get a bit confused after changing through drastic altitudes or should I be concerned about getting these codes?
