nobody makes head studs for teh 7.3L other than Ken At DPS(there are 2 so make sure you get teh right one).ARP only makes a stud kit for the 6.9L.They are nice but not strong enough for me.Only 190Klbs tensil.I like Kens stuff best. His 7.3L set is 270K Lbs I think.Or to put it another way,the studs will RIP CHUNKS outta the block before they stretch or break.Which is the way I like it since I am a Power *****.MORE POWER MORE POWER.500+ Horsepower is very obtainable from a lowely Mechanically injected Ford IDI without the use of Major drugs. Now if you wanted to use Drugs you can bump these engine to well over 600-700HP.Wouldn't be a long lived engine(100K) but would go.

Stage 3 Pump and sewer Pipe injectors
LOW compression
BIG boost numbers
Stiff valve springs for higher RPM
Pane
W/W injection
Funny Fuel
and a few more top secret internal stuff........

Do you have any links to an IDI pushing 500hp+? Best I have ever seen was an IDI pushing 322hp with alot of work into it...

HAHA, sorry about that. I read about them being powerstroke studs so I edited it out. I then got to thinking, wouldn't the 7.3 PS have the same size studs as the 7.3 IDI?

99.9% of all fasteners in cast iron will be coarse threaded. Cast iron in general is pretty poor steel and it isn't good enough to be able to support fine threads and it is so brittle that it is hard to get a good fine thread cut in it...

Also the head bolts like for a 6.9 aren't actually 7/16 bolts. The shank is smaller to allow for the head to move. Head bolts are like this on most engine for this reason....

I am curious as to how a head bolt out of a 6.9 compares to a real 7/16 bolt. Tensil and shear strength. I will test them and find out...

anyone ever use healy coils? I dont think I spelled that right but from what I was told back in the day is that they are always stronger than regular threaded in studs and that's what the best machine shop in my town that I grew up in in north NJ would use on their drag racing motors pushing over 1000hp, they would use them if the threads didn't need a repair or not on the entire block...

The little paper in my box of ARP head studs listed three different parts numbers for three different strength studs that fit the 6.9.
I do remember the 220,000 pound listing which is what my number was.
There was a 190,000 pound listing.
And I don't remember the other listing.
Not sure if that paper is still in the garage or not.

If I remember right the 6.9 studs also are the same size as a Chevy gas engine, 350 I think it was.

Head bolts listed for the 6.9 IDI are 7/16" 14 UNC 5.25" long
Head bolts listed for the 7.3 IDI are 1/2" 13 UNC 6" long

Although I did not measure the studs while out of the engine, I would guess the length to be 6".
With the stud bottomed out in the block against the shoulder at the top of the threads, there was about 3/4" of stud protruding through the head.

The ARP studs have larger bolt shanks, just like a standard bolt would.
The head bolts had a much smaller diameter shank in relation to the thread diameter.
