Question 4R100 Making Noises

I sure someone on here can help me with a little troubleshooting on my wonderful transmission. I have a 2000 F-250 CC Lariat with the V-10. When I start the truck, I hear a high pitch noise. It's like a high pitch whine. It changes frequency as you rev the engine in park. Put the transmission into gear. Either forward or reverse, and the nois is lower pitch. As you accelerate, the noise will change frequency. If the tranny is manually shifted, the nois will go away, and then come back a short time later. The noise is audible while driving especially in third and OD. Has anyone heard of this before. The truck has 93,000 and is dead reliable except for this. I have been under the truck, and I can tell it's coming from the tranny. Not sure if it's the converter or what. Any advice or information would be appreciated very much.

I wouldn't drive it I would get it to a tranny shop right away. Maybe you can prevent a big problem.. Could be TC for sure..

Get it into a repair shop .
What you are hearing could be either the converter or one of the planitray gear sets going bad. both of which the 4r100 are known for haveing go bad. Personally my guess is the planitary gear sets inside.

For this trans we recormend rebuilding in a stage 2 street with a billet convertor. This would be the red raybestus clutches and matching steels, Updateing the planitary sets to the latest numbers. A new super pump. Up graded valve body And our custom built for your needs, billet 3 disc lockup pack converter with stock stall speed to match your v10's torque curve.

Also if you wish you could give us a call just state your from FTE.

Hmmmm.....

He said that the noise is there at start up, and in gear with the truck not moving. The planetaries are not moving when the truck is not moving, so are they making noise from fear of the awesome torque of the V10? I think not.

It could be the pump, or the converter. I think it is more likely that it is something in the front of the engine, like a belt tensioner, alternator, etc.

with out hearing the noise first hand. no one can be correct. the man states noise from the trans. that can be modified by manually shifting. which means he is holding back and building up pressure inside.and by doing so the noise goes away for a short while.

3 items can make noise inside a automatic. converter, pump and planitary sets. the planitarys if well worn can be heard in many different manners as they do move untill locked up by a clutch pack or band. when this is done either the sun gear moves around the planitarys or the planitarys move around inside the sun gear. worn needle bearings, worn out gears or loose shafts will be heard.

again this vehicle needs to have a proper on site check out/ diag. done at a shop properly set up to do so

Not quite.
The planets move around the sun, and inside the ring. The sun never moves around the planets, and the planets can never get inside the sun, that's impossible. The order in a planetary gear assembly, from inside to outside, is sun, planets, ring.

He also said that the noise changes, but doesn't go away when it's in gear and not moving. None of the planetaries are moving when it's in gear and the truck isn't moving.

I've seen many cars/trucks where the owner said the trans was making noise, but the real reason for the noise was the front end accessory drive.

We can agree that he needs an expert to listen to the truck in person and diagnose what's wrong.

I've seen the sun rotate around the planet and yet the planet is rotating on its own. If you stare at the sun you can see a ring but it doesn't rotate at all. Just wasting time at work. Good luck getting your tranny fixed.

The noise is also present while I am driving down the road. It is hard to hear in first and second, and then it gets more noticeable as it goes into third and finally overdrive.

Hi, I know it's an old thread but my transmission is doing the exact same thing that you described in the OP. Did you ever figure out what the problem was?
