What is this part?

1988, 302, Automatic.

On the back of the motor there is a ?Part? that looks like emission thingy. It is a canister directly in the middle of the motor with two hoses running from the center of the canister to each cylinder head.

Now here is the problem, the canister part is missing; the hoses are there with the base of the canister. I noticed this when I was replacing my solenoid and did the usual start test and noticed there was exhaust or gas fumes running up my hood at a pretty good rate. It was also -17c(-5F) and it was really puffing out the smoke/fumes from where the canister used to be. I also stuck my finger in the hole of what was left from the canister and noticed that there was a lot of carbon on it.(?)

I have noticed that when I put my heater fan on high I will notice an exhaust smell from in the cab. This is, I can assume, where the smell is coming from as it is very close to the intake for my heater.

I have searched my Haynes manual and found nothing except a diagram of the engine with the complete unit.

Does anyone know what this is and what it does? I was thinking some sort of cylinder head pressure balancer, but not sure.

Please help.

What is this part?

I think those are referred to as the A.I.R. tubes. Try rockauto.com for a replacement.

I don't think that you should run the heater until you fix this, unless your name is Kevorkian.

What is this part?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-13-03 AT 04:03 PM (EST)]They ARE A.I.R. injection. Not certain what was factory for other than 92 up but, there is an air injection bypass valve that is controlled by the computer back in that area on mine. The tubes get fresh air from the smog pump and they push fresh air into the heads just above the exhaust valves if I remember correctly. There should be at least one check valve on the cross over tube between the heads. If that valve is missing or damaged, hot exhaust will escape back through the heads and out those tubes. Newer 302's have a metal cross over tube and one hose from the bypass valve into the check valve and it splits off to each head below the check valve. It sounds like you may have two individual hoses, one for each cylinder head. If exhaust is getting back through them, there is at least a check valve missing. I had the check valve on mine snap in half and the hot exhaust melted through the main wiring harness and the EGR vaccuum supply. Royal mess.

The part you're describing is the "check valve" for the thermactor air system (catalytic converters). It prevents exhaust from the heads from flowing backward out of the metal tube and into the rubber hose that ultimately leads to the air pump - air is ONLY supposed to flow from the rubber TO the metal, and into the exhaust system. It's very common for that to rust out, and they're only about $12 at a parts store, but you need to bring the rubber hose & the crossover pipe (the one that goes between the heads) with you so can get the right one. The crossover has only 1 bolt on the back of each head.

Ok, sourced the part from Ford Parts. Now, any issues with changing the valve, Ford service told me that it would be three hours of labor to do the complete job, Check valve and cross over tube. They said the cross over tube is usually messed up by taking the valve off.

Please advise, I am quite competent with a wrench, but this is my daily driver and do not want to have it sitting idle for more than a Saturday.

LOTS OF LIQUID WRENCH, a decent 4-6" bench vise, and be delicate when you're breaking the remains of the check valve off the crossover tube. Of course, if you can see the tube is rusty already, just forget it & buy a new one - parts stores sell the tube for ~$35 and you might even get a LLT warrant...
