Charcoal Canister Testing

Does anyone know how to test the charcoal canister of the EECS system?

My Haynes manual says to disconnect the hose from the purge valve to the cansister and blow into it. A good canister is indicated when little or no air blows into it.

When I do this with my canister, there is no resistance and you can blow right through it.

I disconnected the hose that runs from the canister to the gas tank and blew into it and felt resistance, so I don't think there is a leak in that direction.

Just wanted to make sure that this was a valid test before I plunk down $92 for a new canister.

Welcome to FTE Jim. I have never heard of a cannister going bad. Does this have some thing to do with a smog test?

No, nothing to do with a smog test-

My 'Check Engine' light keeps coming on and the soft code points to something in the EECS system according to the tech that read the code for me. I went through the test procedure in my Haynes manual and everything checked out OK, except for the Canister.

I just wanted to get a second opinion before I go and replace it because it is not cheap-

BTW, is it possible for me to read the codes on this engine? My manual says that 1995 and later require a special reader instead of using the check engine light.

Do not replace the canister, it is probably the canister purge valve and the sensor (the kit (both, sensor and valve) is about $75 at the dealer) I had the same problem (code, P1443 EVAP Vacuum System, Purge or VMV Fault ) and after replacing them it went away
