Hello, Im new here I have just bought a new looking 1999 F350 dually 4x4 / 7.3 and 4 speed auto/overdrive 115,000mi.
the problem is,
When I begin to drive it shifts perfectly at about 1800rpms from 1st to 2nd, then and at 1800 from 2nd to third, then instead of going into 4th it wait untill around 22-2300 then enters 4th for 1/2 second, then immediatly into OD resulting in a drop from 2300 to around 1200, this is while driving normally, If I give it 3/4 throttle and hold from start to end it hits 4th fine, Also when im cruising in OD, I can push the OD button off and instead of dropping into 4th, it screams its way into 3rd, Im going to have it coded next week, any ideas in the mean time?...by the way this site is wonderfull

this should be a 4 speed tranny.if you push the od off button it's gonna go into third.are you sure you aren't feeling the converter clutch lock-up,it feels like it shifted again.

I was just assuming 4speed with OD meant you had 4 speeds then OD, at 1/2 - 3/4 throttle it definitly shifts through 4 gears properly then lands in OD. but at normal acceleration it only stays in 4th for a 1/2 second, rpms go from real high to real low

Im going to have it scanned tommorrow, Ill let my tranny man know about the snapring, I havnt dropped the pan, I hope the only trash in there is just the spring, again it works perfectly though at 1/2-3/4 throttle.........except for the OD button....thanks for the help
You have a four speed overdrive transmission with a lockup torque converter. That means there are four ratios, with the last one being overdrive. There is no overdrive after fourth gear, fourth gear IS overdrive. When the torque converter locks it feels like another shift.
yes, my tranny guy says everything is perfect, no codes at all, however Im dissatisfied with the shifting, is there anyway (adjustment) to extend the time before the convertor locks up? yes im used to a gasser, but it seems very laggy locking up at 40mph
It is dependant on speed more than rpm. My 03 has this shift sequence under light and moderate throttle. The TC will only lock in third and OD. It will lock in at 35 mph and disengage below 30 mph. The TC will aways lock up before going into OD. It goes into OD at 45 mph and will drop back to third below 40 mph. On the downshift the converter will unlock and it will shift back to third. The converter will lock again and once the speed is reached go into OD.
