351m swap error

I swapped a 300-6 out of my 78 f250 4 speed 4x4 and installed a 351m which had been hooked up to an automatic. I obtained the bell housing, clutch, flywheel from the wreckers and all bolted up just fine...almost. The starter just barely reaches the flywheel and only catches the very edge. I have the correct starter. My question is, could there be a spacer left on the motor from its automatic days keeping the flywheel out further from the starter than it should be? Incidentally, the truck started up fine, clutch worked great all bolts properly located no problem other than the starter barely catches, and now it is wearing away the teeth on the starter on the last 1/16". I hope this is clear I don't have much time to get this done and I was wondering if there is anything specific I should be looking for. It has been suggested that I grind away the plate between the tranny and engine to allow the starter a little more inward travel but I prefer not to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
