Might swap my 360/3speed to a 302 with an automatic. parts seem to be cheaper, and gas milage is better with not much power loss. Anything I need to think about other than mounts, drive shaft and shifter placement? I'm a cheap S.O.B. (Ive got two little crumb snatchers so part money is limited. )
Found a rusted out bucket that has a good 302 w/automatic. guy wants $300 for it.

I know a guy who did what you're talking about back in the 80's. He ended up spending the bank on a 302 that couldn't get out of it's own way. You have to change EVERYTHING on this swap.(engine, transmission, mounts, exhaust, etc.) You'll be better off keeping the 360 and/or stroking it to a 390.
Actually, IMO, I had a 74 F100 2wd w/302 and 3 speed. It performed great for light loads and highway driving, but it was limited with heavy loads. So if the 360 is worn out, just swapping in the 302 would make life easier. Just need to track down a small block bellhousing. The C6 is known to steal horsepower.
just to update: Found a 4speed toploader. Gonna stick it to my 360 untill I get a 390 to rebuild. Still need to find the rear pinion yolk and a drive shaft, and figure out how the hurst shifter and linkage rods go together. I guess its better to go to a straight driveshaft from the tranny to the rear and do away with all the carrier bearing bs. Still gonna get the 302 and stuff. (just cause I am a packrat.)
Leave the 2 pc shaft there. It's not hurting anything. I ran the stock one in my 89 Ranger for 3 years after swapping in a V8 and 4 speed. You'll just need to shorten the front shaft for a Toploader. Hurst still makes and sells the shifter install kits along with the shifter. You can look up the part numbers on their site and order from Summit Racing. If you'll measure the shaft you need from front to rear, I have a bunch of these in my shop collecting dust from various applications.
