bell housing help
was told my manual bellhousing would work and it fits ok but i needed a new flw wheel and i found one on EBAY thought it was right but of course i was wrong it has 157 teeth so my question is can i get a diffrent starter and use this one or or do i have to get a bigger fly wheel or maby a diffrent bellhousing
any help would be great\
thanx paul
I believe bellhousing is right.
Just get correct flywheel to fit engine you have. I don't believe amount of teeth determines flywheel size. In fact you may be able to just use a different ring gear, if balance is right on flywheel you have, for engine you have. I think diameters are fairly typical as in all the same among non SVO 302 and other 5.0L Windsors
The balance issue is more important than flywheel teeth IMHO. I'm not a big 5.0L or 302 fan so I might be wrong, but if I am somebody will set me straight.

The 157 tooth flywheel is for the 5.0/5.8 fuel injected windors. Swapping the starter might work but I can't say for sure. Check the Windor engine forum to see what they come up with though before you spend more cash.

There are two sizes of bell housing and also flywheels. 164 tooth flywheel measures approx 14.25" across and works with the wider/older bell. 157 tooth measures approx 13.25" and is used with the newer bells (generally) to mate with trannys like the T5.
Balance is also an issue. Prior to '81/82 an imbalance of 28 oz. was used. After 82 an imbalance of 50 oz was used. Keep the imbalance the same on the flywheel as on the harmonic balancer behind the crankshaft pulley up front.
From what you've described I'd say you're looking for a 164 tooth flywheel with 28 oz imbalance. to work with your bellhousing. Any junk yard should be able to set you up. If not check with supply houses like NAPA or Speedway.
You guys did a great job explaining details of what I was trying to say, I 'preciate it.
I knew they all fit, but do not "interchange" or work correctly. I also know why that is, as we're all saying. What I don't/ can't remember is details like how many teeth & how many Oz's of balance weight difference there is.
I also just learned using both 28 Oz or both 50 Oz [flywheel & Harmonic balancer] on either Early or a Late "W" Engine. I didn't realize it was the remedy Hhmm? Interesting!
I know there are Nodular Cast steel Bellhousings & light wght cast alloy bell housings. If you plan to run a 351W that's been "prepped", go for a Nodular steel, as alloy is capable of breaking with a healthy shot of "bottle", or a big increase in displacement like the +390, +410 or +427 stroker engine options possible from a 351W block. But that's way too hi tech for this topic I s'pose.

Maybe? Also keep in mind he has a manual bellhousing and flywheel.
when swapping to newer fly wheel and harmonic balancer do not use the water pump from newer donor motor,
they ( turn backwards ).
P.S. just keep fly wheel and bell housing matched together or your starter
will not engage, was tought this at the school of hard knocks!
