i know that some of you are gunna think im crazy, but how hard is it to rebuild a E40D and if its possible in my garage, waht up grades and parts should i get, the trans is starting to slip and wont shift under full throttle, and i wanna put a lift kit and bigger tires on it and i know thats just not going to make that wimpy E40D happy, i have a history of making transmissions break, i thend to put way tomuch power threw them, i blew up a drag race built C4 in my 67 stang so i made it a tko500 5spd, i blew up the T5 in my 1994 5.0 so i put in a wc cobra T5, and this puppy is starting to go to, it has a superchip, 4in exhaust, cai, and 33 in wheels, im not sure what gears it has but it runs 59mph at 2000 rpm i believe, im lookin to make it almost bulit proof with some extra goodies too, its got a shift kit, but what clutches should i get what planetarty? ect. i know its alot but thanks, and im tryin to do this on the cheap "sorta" if you call workin a diesel cheap......
I hate to say it but if you want a bulletproof tranny from the start you need to have it built by an experienced tranny guy (like brians truck shop) I think it will run you about $4k but it will be the best. There are many secrets to building these things and thats why brian does this for a living. I dont think a shift kit will give you what your looking for.
It is easier (and cheaper) to fix it right the first time than it is to fix it a few times.
true, but im still wondering if i can build one myself, i mean if people can build a 1000 hp motor by reading a book and following instructions carfully you must beable to build a good trans the same way, if theres a will there a way, and i know my way around custom projects,
Good point, and every builder has their own little tricks to make the tranny stronger. The auto tranny isnt that complicated and you could do it easily with instructions but.. if I were a tranny builder I wouldnt want to give away all the secrets that would make my product better than others.
You can get an entire rebuild kit and install new clutches and all that stuff and install a shift kit and I bet it would give you many years of service. If you plan on going with larger injectors than stock I would recomend getting it build by a good builder. Also getting a upgraded torque converter helps the tranny live longer.
i agree with every thing you say, i dont think im going to bigger injectors un till my wallet gets alot bigger so that wont be an issue, what tc should i use and i hear that the borg warner clutches are the best, what planetary gears should i get, valve body upgrades ect... thanks
I wouldnt just guess. I think you should do some research and search past forums for other peoples experiences. Talk to local tranny guys and ask them their opinion on what the best brands are. Not many people rebuild their own trannys, maybe thats why your not getting much feedback.
true, i was just hoping that someone out there was crazy like me and already did this, thnks tho, ill see what kind of crazy transmission i can build hehe!
If yours is stock you probably have 3 aluminum planets with an aluminum ring. They have to go to steel and get 4. Get a good sonnex kit, replace the pump, get a welded TC. Billet is not neccessary. There are clutches with new material for heavy duty. They are used in ambulances and dumps. They are better. Get a big cooler, and a filter. If you have to replace the solonoid get it from Ford. Everything must be very CLEAN. I use synthetic fluid to keep it cooler, but it is more expensive.
Research it at different vendor sites. They all do a few different things.
Make sure you have a good trans temp gauge.
You can get parts from our sponsors, like Level 10, etc. Good luck with it.
You need to post a signature so we can see what you're working on without having to go to your user profile. I'm a dial-up snail but I went and looked anyway. You have a 97 and that's good news for you. In 97 they finally made some good upgrades to the E4OD. You need to get a beefed up rebuild kit with some better, tougher components in it. The aluminum gear set is a must to be changed to the steel set. The center support has an upgrade that is good. The pump can be upgraded after making certain it is a high output pump. If it's a low output then it really needs to be changed out for a HO and then upgraded. All your clutches and steels need to be made out of the best materials like Red Eagle clutches and Kolene steels. All premium high temp o-rings and seals. A new drum, sonnex kit for increased line pressures and programmable valve body for controlled shift points. Upgraded gear pack and a big new cooler.
I've got a E4OD rebuild site that will blow your mind with complete step-by-step with great pictures. The FTE system won't let me post it because it's from another diesel site. It really pissed me off because I spent an hour doing a complete written response and then tagged the hyperlink on the end of it and it chewed up my post and threw it away where I couldn't find it. Made me feel like I wasted my time here tonight. PM me and we'll figure out a way to get it to you.
I think I've read your sight a long time ago, it was very detailed as well. If you could send me the link in a pm please.
I've had some recent work done on my tranny, selinoid pack for shifting, up the pressures, was told I needed the selinoid pack for whatever reason. I did confirm, I do have a seliniod pack on it other then stock because it has a circuit board on it, overall works great.
Regardless, I would like it for myself cause after word he said he needed a huge press to take apart the tranny any further then the pump if I wanted work done in the future and I have my doubts on that.
