E40D Rebuild Kit?

Hey guys, a week or so ago I posted that I blew my trans and was trying to decide whether to rebuild my trans or buy a used one. I would obviously prefer a fully built trans, but being a poor college student, I'm not looking to shell out 3-5k right now. I'm thinking of finding a used transmission that I can put in the truck right now and then rebuilding the old trans myself. I know there are rebuild kits for the E40D, but I was wondering if there are performance rebuild kits. I tow occasionally with the truck now and will be towing more with it in the future, so I'd like the beef up the trans if possible. Has anybody done this or can anyone recommend a god performance rebuild kit? Thanks

You are about to embark on a very steep learing curve if you have never been inside one of these. Good luck to ya

Here's a step by step "How To" from racer x
Complete E4OD High Performance T

Here's a good place for parts. Racer x has them too. You may need to borrow a few special tools to get 'er done.
E4OD Performance Transmissions and Parts, 4R100

Thanks for the links. I've never rebuilt a trans before, so I'll probably be in way over my head. Right now I'm still just weighing all of my options. I have a few friends who are mechanics and have pretty nice shops who are willing to help me. I could buy a built trans, but I would rather rebuild it myself. Not so much to save money, mainly just to gain experience. I've found you can read as much as you want or watch as many car shows as possible, but the only real way to learn is by diving in and doing it yourself.

That's a great way to learn,......having someone that knows what they are doing while you watch/learn + they have the tools is good insurance it will get done right........ the first time.

CANNOT HAVE ANY AND I MEAN NOT ONE!! LEFTOVER PART NUT OR BOLT!! IF YOU TORQUE THE VALVE BODY BOLTS DOWN TOO TIGHT, IF YOU DONT TORQUE THEM ENOUGH, IF you dont correctly orientate the split in snap rings, line up lube oil ports correctly, put thrust washers in upside down, use the wrong gasket, miss a check ball or put it in the wrong spot put a sprag clutch in backwards or in correctly line up the duckies..... epic failure!! very picky transmissions!! just a warning (: have fun!! you most likely will not get it right the first time without a lot of help from people who know these inside and out. sorry about my caps lock....

Thank you all for the advice, those links are very useful. If I do decide to tackle this ambitious project, I will share it in a thread. I'm sure I will fail at rebuilding it but it's worth a shot.

Its just going to take a whole lot of patience and not losing pieces and a lot of advice. I tore into my first e4od and had to tear into it 4 more times before i got it to work correctly. My main issue was the valve body was hanging up. If you get the tranny out of the truck let us know and we will go from there. It is best to leave the low reverse clutches in the tranny and reuse them if those are still good. What is your transmission doing right now?? We havent even diagnosed it yet! Dont take it to have the codes read thats a waste of money

Looking to do the same

Looking to rebuild my transmission as well, I have experience, but my question is where would I find a kit that includes gears and shafts as well as bearings. Every rebuild kit I come across includes everything but.
Essentially I'm gutting and tossing all but shell, the transmission will be powered by a 5.0lr HO engine and I will be doing little towing, but it is not out of the question.
Any suggestion kits?

Transmission has 310k km on it, and pulled a heavy bale wrapper for 50k of its life. First gear is going and. OD gives truck a minor pulsing vibration up to my foot/floor board.
This is why I'm assuming/ figure its best just to get and toss internals
