Rat Rod question

Rat Rod question
What makes a Rat Rod a Rat Rod? Is it more of the flat base colors used? To me personally, these are great looking vehicles because I am into the flat colors and no chrome look. Does anyone on this forum have this kind of set up?

Yeah, I think they're pretty cool too.
The guys showed up a couple weeks after that picture was taken with another one they just finished. It was dark out so I didn't get a picture of it. Thing I liked was the new one had a flathead 8 in it. I love the sound of that motor.

I have to wonder if the previous owner of my new car was trying to make it a rat rod- It's a 70 Galaxy 500, painted flat black/primer, with white, yellow, and red flames on the front. It does have a red rim too-
