223 coolant flow help

Does the coolant flow in reverse in the 1964 F100 223 6 cyl, meaning the thermostat is installed with spring and pellet towards the radiator instead of motor?

I installed thermostat with spring and pellet towards motor and at 5 min idle top radiator hose is very tight, 7 # cap releases and coolant flows out, radiator hot to touch. Temp gauge is not working. 90 % sure original thermostat installed opposite direction. Thanks for reply.

I'll check my 62 in the morning (it's down in the back pasture under a couple feet of snow) but that would be backward from anything else I've seen. Even my old flatheads take coolant from the bottom of the radiator and circulate it thru the block before it gets to the thermostat and then into the top tank of the radiator.

It sounds almost like symptoms of a failed head gasket that's allowing combustion gasses to get into the coolant. That would cause a loss of frothy coolant, pressure on the system, etc.

You might try leaving the rad cap off and start it up and watch what happens in the top tank. Be careful that it doesn't burp hot coolant on you. If you see froth and excessive bubbles soon I'd suspect a head gasket.

If nothing shows up that way I'd pull the T-stat and see what happens in the radiator top tank.

Every thermostat installs with the spring/element towards the engine, failure to install correctly, will cause the t/stat not to open, or open only when the water in the radiator top/side tank reaches the boiling point.
