Coolant flow through a 4.6

I need a diagram that shows the flow of the coolant through a 4.6 Anyone got one? Thanks in advance!

Basically, the water pump pushes water into the water jacket at the front of the motor, it travels down around the cylinders to the back of the motor, then up the back into the heads, and then to the front where it comes out the heads and goes into the intake crossover, and then out the thermostat to the radiator.

The heater core is fed from the back of the motor where the water passes up into the head, and then that is routed back to the intake crossover area. At least, for the 4.6's I've seen.

That's a simplistic view.

Why do you ask?

How will an "even flow kit" act on a pickup?

The reason I ask is this. Af friend bought a 95 Cougar w/the 4.6 in it. It had water in the oil so he suspitioned it was the oil filter housing? gasket. He changed it and it was bad. However, when he starts to fill it the water still runs out of the pan. So, I was wondering if there were any parts, aside from the block, that could go bad in the lower end. By the way, the car runs but does NOT smoke like a head gasket. Any clues? Thanks in advance.

Check behind the water pump, and see if the timing cover is eaten through, or broken, or something like that. Otherwise, maybe a gasket went bad where the timing cover meets the block. It's gotta be something at the timing cover, if it's just pouring out of the pan like that.

I guess it's always possible the bottom edge of the water jacket cracked and it's going in there, but check the cheap stuff first

Thanks! I'll have him take a look and I'll post the results.

Doesn't the waterpump go directly into the block on a Mod engine? The timing cover goes beside the pump.

You're right, I was thinking FE for some reason.

And the lower radiator hose goes onto an extension that bolts right to the side of the block.

So WHY is water pouring out the oil pan?

Some of the early 4.6L engines (your Cougar vintage) suffered from ruptured intake crossovers. There is a kit currently available for the intake manifold to correct the problem. Shop around for the kit as the prices vary greatly for the exact same kits.

Ronnie, the only problem with that is, if it did rupture, and is pouring water into the oil pan, that means the piston has a big gaping hole in it

Not necessarily

If coolant is leaking out of the manifold, it will find it's way down through the block, via the valley, and then into the pan. If there are no other obvious signs of coolant loss, I am willing to bet it is the crossover.
As a sanity check, go to a junkyard...err...automotive recycling center...and try to find a good 4.6L intake on that vintage.

Water won't run right out of the oil pan via that route.

Something else is munged. Could be, the intake cracked, flooded a cylinder and cracked the piston.

Head gasket, cracked block, cracked head? The oil filter housing cracked? It flows both coolant and oil.

I dropped a nut down in the water jacket opening right behind the thermostat opening andI can't get it.
