Hi everybody, I have decided to start a new project now that I have my 4x4 the way I want it and so I've decided to make a fast truck. I looking at maybe 92-95 f-150 short box with a regular cab. The truck has to street legal so I am going to stay with a fuel injected motor. I am not sure If I should go with a 5.0L or a 5.8L motor and I was hoping to get any kind of feed back, tips or advise from anybody that can help thanks.
How fast do you want to go lol my 93 Reg cab Long box with a 5.8L mostly stock except aftermarket exhaust really is a fast enough ride for me well if you want fast i would go with 5.8L lots of performance parts maybe consider a lightining they already beefed up but be careful speed kills
with a 5.8l motor you can stroke it cheaper than a 302..about 300 dollars diffrence...motor mounts, headers, and wiring harness are the same but the computer is diffrent ...slap some 3.73 or 4.10's in the rear along with a freeflow exhaust...for the computer to read the stroker motor you will need the MAS conversion for sure...24lbs injectors new fuel rail and stronger pumps in tank ....I would have said EGR blockoff plate and one of those A/C remover pulleys but I still didnt put that on mine cause I need the A/C even though mine doesnt work right now...it is possible to make high Hp with a 302 but even easier to make more Hp with the same amount of money on a 351...as soon as I paint my current truck and finish all the little finishing touches ,I am going to be ordering parts for a 351 build up for my 85....its going to be a Superstreeter....prolly not completely streetlegal....but I will manage to slide by inspections
a 351 in a regular cab short box truck should be fun. if you want efi try to find a motor with mass air flow, some 94-95 and all 96's are maf, maf takes to upgrades better then speed density. you can upgrade speed density to maf, for about 300 bucks.
start off with simple things like, free flowing exhaust, a tuner, cold air intake. after that, bigger throttle body, perfomance upper and lower intakes, headers and a cam.
"street legal" means differnt things in differnt places in the country. will the truck have to pass emissons test? do you live in california? if your anwser was yes to either question then a performace motor may be a little harder to make.
it all comes down to how much you want to spend, if it were me i'd throw a carbed 460 in there, simple and big.
Either get a 93-95 Lightning (already has a 351, gt40 heads and intake, 4.10 gear, NICE interior, etc) or build a 351 for the truck. Windsors can be stroked out to over 400 cubic inches (there are reports of some aftermarket blocks going all the way out to 470, though thats talking big money). I just put a 351 windsor with Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, a small roller cam, Edelbrock 5.8 lower and Professional Products upper, headers, Mustang A9L processor and 80mm C&L mass air, and MSD 6AL box into mine (88 truck, 5 speed). It should be fun once tuned.
If you don't have to do any sort of emissions inspection though, a 460 isn't that tough of a swap either.
Thanks for all the help guys. I'm trying to find out right now if a carbed motor will pass my local emissios test or not because that would save me alot of trouble with EFI. I have decided to go with a 351 so now all I need is a truck.
I would have liked to find an early lightning but they are pretty rare up in Canada and I can't really afford one in good shape.
