Ok, i have been putting this whole engine swap thing together for a few months now, and thought all was well until today. Last week or so i had my new drive shaft welded up and installed it. I also installed my new shifter, and then let it sit. We today i was in the garage getting a few things cleaned up and tought i would roll my truck forward a bit so that i could get around behind it and to the other side. To my surprise, it wouldn't roll (man power not engine). I went thru every gear, still no luck. I droped the shaft and messed with it, clearly found park, that was good. Every gear selection from there back would turn one was fairly easy and the other direction was tougher then crap - somewhat expected, those are the gears. I never found what felt like neutral.
Is my tranny cooked?
Is there another way to test for neutral?
I believe the the torque converter is in correctly, without binding, but that is the only thing i can think of - maybe i have something pinched on the front side.
Any thoughts?
If you were out of park the torque convertor binding(if it were binding) wouldn't matter, with the engine off the tranny pump isn't pumping, so the gears can't engage, and therefore every gear acts like neutral. Make sure it isn't in park(so even if you're not sure where it is on the shifter on the tranny just put it in the middle gears and you'll be for sure out of park) If you're sure it is the tailshaft not spinning you might have issues. Make sure your brakes aren't locked up. That happens during lengthy sits.... Just a thought.
i would also make sure you can turn your engine. i would assume so if you have installed the 4 bolts holding the troq converter to your fly wheel. i just know a buddy didnt get his torq to click twise and we couldnt turn the engine
I can turn the engine. i can actually turn the yoke, but with both hands and closer to not turning thay anything. I also looked, the brakes arent sticking all the wheels wiggle.
if you can turn the tranny tailshaft the problem isn't that your tranny is locked up. Did you physically jack up the rearend and spin the wheels? Just because they "wiggle" doesn't mean the brakes aren't locked up- there is some give in the shoes/backing plates.
i cant push my truck in neutral with no parking brake and with new bearings. these old truck are hard to push!!!! id jack the back wheels up and try that then pull the d-shaft and start markin out things
i lifted the truck and was able to rotate all four tires. When i said that i could rotate the yoke, I talking like barely turning it. i really think its inside the tranny. Guess i will have to rework it. Is rebuilding a tranny tough? I have done an engine, never a tranny.
check out our web site. in it you will find area for the c6 where we can help you out with the same manual all the shops use. then if you need parts we can also help you with rebuilding parts. stock/stage 1, 2, or 3 beefing kits.
Now did you remove the drive shaft and try pushing the truck then? park is fully machanical inside and works off the out side control linkage. moveing a large rod and pawl in side and engages the park gear on the out put shaft just under the tail shaft houseing.
If you unbolt that houseing you will see a heavy almost multi star shaped gear. the pawl engages that gear for park from inside and under the oil pan.
don't be afraid to call ua and ask for help. just state your from fte.
I tore into my first tranny (C6) today. not a whole lotta parts- I bought a book for rebuiling them, $20 at parts store. From reading it seems like it's pretty straight forward on these old trannys. Rebuild kit was $140. I'll let ya know how it turns out :-)
