98 Mountaineer 60k. I just bought from a friend with 5.0 2wd. The trans hangs onto the 2-3 shift. I have to let up on the gas completely to get it to shift sometimes. When it does shift, either the 3-4 shift occurs or TCC locks up immediately.
So.
I pulled the valve body and found the 1-2 accumulator lower spring broken, the 3-4 accumulator spring retainer and spring dropped out when I dropped the valve body. It is not a snap ring just a plate with 3 legs that sits in the bore cutout in the trans housing.
2. I replaced the shift solenoids, tcc solenoid and a new epc solenoid. I checked the shift valves and springs in the valve body all move ok. I am waiting for the gaskets and spring from the dealer. Have I missed anything ? Is it possible that the 2-3 accumulator spring retainer and spring would cause a shift delay? The 1-2 shift was ok even with the broken spring. I opened the old shift solenoids and found no debris. The trans fluid was ok.
Update. I replaced the solenoids ,new 1-2 and2-3 accumulators, new spring and cleaned and checked valve body for debris. New valve body gaskets 3 intotal., drained converter. Running and shifting like new. Factory workshop maunual makes it easy, parts approx $140. If the trans fluid is not burnt most problems from my research appear to be solenoid or valve body related which can be fixed without trans removal. A good set of ramps available from walmart in heavy plastic for $40 and an inch pound torque wrench. Just my experiance
