Thank you Scndsin for getting me up to date on that. I forgot about the California trucks!

So basically the only way to go through with a MAF conversion with the E4OD is to either find a 95 California truck with the same setup, including MAF, or to get a standalone controller for the transmission, correct?

The other alternative is to find a parts truck of this vintage that is equipped with the ZF manual 5 speed. Then you can swap to MAF and not worry about the transmission.

But if we are going to get onto that topic, someone please start a new thread as this one is getting way off track. If it's transmission related, post it in the Transmission/Differential/Axle forum, rather than using up the 87-96 F series' bandwith.

I'm a happy camper. It shifts solid now and I think I've saved my tranny. 73,000 miles on it when I bought it. It was used exclusively to haul a 34 ft 5th wheel, otherwise it sat.

Like Handyman said the tc doesn't lock up in 2nd unless your in a hard pull or heavy accelleration. Sonnax has other valves to change that if you want. I elected to go with the tricumulator valve change only.
I have a 1995 F350 with the E4OD. My shifts are very sloppy even after a Ford Factory replacement E4OD.

What is the best way to increase shift firmness/speed? I have looked at the B&M electronic unit as well as some of the valve body upgrades and not sure what is the best route to take.

I have looked at several 94 up F150 with 302 e4od that were MAF . I have one and have done swaps on 3 trucks down to late 92 with no problems. If trans has been rebuilt to 94 up spec's and has the harness thats same. You will have to swap firewall out harness with newer as well as ECU and Maf and MAF air box and engine harness. The firing order is same for the 351 and 302 after 94. So the ecu will run the bigger motor but don't know how well. You will need to swap wires around in sequentail injector harness to the older 302 order .I had to on last conversion it ran flat . Keep us posted Good luck

SAleen428, I would go to the sonnax website, and decide which kit would work for you. Order it, it's not really expensive, the tranny fluid is....Install the kit and if it's not quite what you want get the stiffer shifting kit. If your still not quite happy then go with one of the electronic shifter kits.

str8racing.....from what I've read any vehicle with the e4od can use these parts. The install is quite easy. Cleanliness is very important. It is not a complicated procedure. I wouldn't get the kit that really boosts the shifting unless your going to race or pull heavy stuff.
I used mercon 5 from ford. I would use what you are comfortable with. You won't have any problems with mercon 3.......although, from what I've read the mercon 3 formula has been discontinued by ford so sooner or later we may only have the new formula, mercon 5 to deal with.

I would install one of these.

Check Sonnax's web and then call them. They will be of great help.

This part is what I installed.

Here is a link on how to do it... Even though it's not the e4od It looks the same and what your going to do is the same.....

I did a complete flush of my tranny, TC etc....I removed 16.5 quarts which left only 1/2 quart residual in the tranny....Mine holds 17.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Which shift kit would you folks recommend? The Transgo Tugger or the Sonnax 96948-01K line pressure modulator? What I am looking to do is get harder faster 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, as well as better holding. Right now my truck under heavy acceleration with my chip is one of the performance settings, likes to shift up and then right back down. It feels like it just hesitates a lot. Thanks

bigfootford, in the installation write-up you posted above.. there is a bag of spings in one of the first pictures. What are these springs? Do they come with the sonnax kit?

jnye6625, I see by your profile you have a 95 psd....

This link might help you.... Do a little reading about the part where the guy is a tranny builder....

I didn't do the 1-2/2-3/3-4 shifter mod.......I just did the sonnax tricum valve.

I think the spring kit comes from here..... Shift kit

I read a lot about the various things you can do and I didn't want to make a big step at first.....after installing the sonnax valve I decided that was good enough for now.

str8racing..... You have some big tires there 35's. That puts more load on the drive train than normal. I would recommend that you make sure you get all the FORD upgrades on that rebuilt tranny...I'm not sure what year the final mods were installed from the factory. I'm sure all would agree....I think it was 96 for the upgrades. Sorry to hear you toasted your tranny.

Here is another write up regarding the sonnax install. You can see by the pix where the springs go if you elected to install them. I don't think sonnax offers the spring shift kit.

I'm not a tranny expert. I've only opened one up in 62 years and it was this one. I've always owned manual tranny autos. My old f250 was a 5 speed zf. I'm a pretty decent mechanic and can follow/read directions. I would suggest if your not able to do that then I'd take the vehicle to a TRUSTED tranny shop, with your parts and have them install them along with a good tranny fluid/filter change.....Bet it wouldn't cost over 200 to have them do it.

How much to rebuild a E4od tranny??

I called around today and was quite surprised at how much I was quoted for rebuilding my E4OD tranny in a 92 Ford 250 4X4 with a 460. Every body acted like this was some strange set up. How much should this cost?? I just read here a guy had one rebuilt for 775 bucks,,,is that about right OR way too low?? Are my local shops trying to shaft me?? TIA- for any info--don--

1just4don ---around here in n. cal a rebuilt tranny is about 1400. You have to add the install price to that.
An e40d in a ford almost anything is common......I wouldn't go near that shop. If you have some company (construction, electrical, plumber) not just ford pickups but vans e250 etc, in town that runs fords, call them and ask who they use for their repair.....
The 750 is low.....
I have read posts that some guys get all the mods to bring the tranny current and the price is 2500-3000 installed.....(ouch) I would think if your easy on your tranny and don't pull heavy stuff in the hills a general rebuild would work ok. I was quoted about 1400 for mine....It didn't need it though, I was lucky...

Maybe someone else will pitch in here on what they have paid.

Jim
