Not trying to get off topic but do you guys really use your parking brake that much? I have never really used them. The two times I used them in my older vehicles they ended up getting stuck, so now I try to use them about once a month just to keep them from rusting up too bad.
All it takes is one good bump from some yokel to damage your tranny (automatic) if the brake isn't engaged. I believe in safety. Pawls and break and then your screwed.
California isn't flat like Peoria where you can stand on a tuna can and see the New York. We have hills and mountains, and a ton of stupid drivers and other nuts who think turning around in your driveway is a God given right. Don't want any of them kissing my bumper and screwing up my tranny. I can tell you as an ex-cop I have seen way to many parked cars get away because the parking pawl didn't hold.
Just last month my sister totaled her Pontiac because she didn't think she would need to use the P-brake for just the short time she was in my mom's steep driveway.
It rolled down the hill and headed straight for the neighbors house across the street. Lucky for her the steering spun it into a power pole instead of the house. Coulda been a disaster.
Getcha a door pop.. Cheap as hell.. Rig it to the back of the handle.. Then find you a solenoid that has a rubber boot on it.. Same type that they use on Manuals for clutch interlock release to start. All it does is the clutch pedal hits it and enables you to to crank, unless your like me and you rig around it. But thats all you need. Use the solidnoid to trip the door popper.. But then again, that wouldn't work because everytime you tap the brake it would pop the handle..
Hmm.. Lemme think.. Gotta be something.. Does your truck have auto lock when put in Drive? If it does you could use that signal wire to trip the popper..
I use the foot method to release my brake cause I'm to lazy to reach down. Works OK for me. I'm sure that the plunger method could be rigged and would work well with a momentary switch, as stated earlier. The Crown Vic / Towncar set up was actuated by vacuum and probably require more trouble to set up than it would be worth.
